im a "legal realist" in terms of the taxonomy of views, i think that if you pick the right hermeneutic you can make a text say whatever you want it to say, so the only thing that matters is the power of the networks that put judges on the court who think in one way or another

so what? that's just politics. right now society is using coercion to make me share ends about all sorts of things. some of them i really dislike, like how much carbon people are allowed to dump into the atmosphere and all the military support the US provides to israel

Gene Wolfe Book of the New Sun is beautiful for its language. The plot is almost illegible until a second read.
IMO the distinction between literary and genre fiction is whether the language or the plot is the focus. You cannot possibly claim the plot is the focus of IJ lol

the most fundamentally anti-intellectual attitude it is possible to have is the attitude of "reverence for great minds." if you're feeling reverent you aren't being intellectual. just a direct contradiction

Hence cycling for me. You need >3000 Kcal for a good life, otherwise no wine no bottarga no organ food no fermented cheese no head cheese no pork ribs no kebbe no croissants w/extra Irish butter no manousheh no tripes no steak tartare no boeuf bourguignon no baba au rhum...
If you try to eat less than ~2,500 kcal/d, you're *supposed to be* hungry. Man just wasn't built to live off <2,500 kcal/d. From an evolutionary standpoint, here's how it's supposed to work... Caloric intake falls, paleolithic man sitting around fire gets hungry. This hunger motivates him to *move*... Sometimes over very long distances in search of food. Trying to ignore or suppress this signal (or the resultant outcome -> extended movement) is suppressing the natural biological balance of your body. Hunger -> Move -> Find food. This is the natural satiety cycle.

2/ Academics & intellectuals are courtiers at heart. They bow to patrons. This runs back 3000 years. Even the lefties are conformists in a certain social structure. I happened to be ferociously independent and have f***you money. This makes patrons uncomfortable. More stories.

worth considering what this says about the republican ideal of liberty, equality, and "fraternity"
Okay I had severely underestimated the extent to which fraternities—in all their scorched earth endlessly perpetuated toxic masculinity—run the United States. celestemdavis.substack.com/p…

Thats because it is a theological discipline not a scientific one
Economics is the *only* scientific field in which the concentration of institutional affiliations of award-winning researchers (i.e., more winners at top universities) has increased over time.nber.org/papers/w35875

"AI alignment" will never be fully solved because embedding norms into a system of natural language isn't an engineering problem. that's a problem of jurisprudence!

Most ppl in academia are rooting for u to fail. This is esp. true if you’re smart. Ppl assume everyone in academia is smart, but that is a misnomer. Being actually smart brings out the most diabolical aspects of colleagues. U know this bc they do insane things when u do not fail.

The Pope smelled the taint of Tzeentch on these cultists
one of the funniest things about the Pope's AI stance is he became very vocal AFTER meeting the Anthropic guys. imagine how odious you need to be to for the POPE to be disgusted by you
