✨Excess fat makes the liver act like it's under viral attack.✨
In a new publication in @jclinicalinvest , we describe how a maladaptive antiviral stress response causes liver injury in metabolic liver disease (MASH). 1/14

What if we could predict the course of the next pandemic before it happened? Tyler Starr, PhD, biochemist at University of Utah Health, studies viral evolution to do just that. Watch the full presentation: youtu.be/il12erThI6g?si=a_HH…

Blocking EFHD1 protects against liver damage in #MASH models: doi.org/10.1172/JCI204023
Dipayan Chaudhuri @ChaudhuriLab & team @UUtah identify EFHD1 as a protein in liver cells that triggers a maladaptive viral response during metabolic stress. In human organoid and mouse models, blocking EFHD1 blunted hepatocyte damage.
The loss of EFHD1 in mouse liver resulted in longer, spaghetti-like mitochondria, as seen in image (1/3). The featured electron micrograph (2/3) shows a liver cell mitochondria about to undergo fission, surrounded by an extensive network of ER contacting it.

This is a really great paper, and a wonderful example of how we can use human genetics to guide us to mechanisms that are relevant to physiology and pathology in humans.

Excited to see this work published in The Journal of Clinical Investigation! A highly collaborative study uncovering a new mechanism driving liver injury in MASH. Glad to have contributed!
Congratulations to David, Dipayan, and the entire team!

Nothing scares me more than Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection (#SCAD), a leading cause of heart attacks in younger women. Yet much of its underlying biology has remained elusive—until now. This study in @CircAHA, led my colleagues at @CVPath_Md, will be a landmark study for 2 reasons: 1) for the first time, a potentially universal structural defect was found in all SCAD cases examined - a reduced medial collagen & smooth muscle cell changes, pointing to a fundamental arterial wall weakness. 2) in quarter of cases, we found pathogenic extracellular matrix variants, correlating with severe, multivessel dissections. @michiganstateu, @MSUMD , @MSU_Medicine, Tagging national #SCAD expert @EstherSHKimMD! ahajournals.org/doi/10.1161/…
