Our proprietary measure of ‘cyclically-sensitive’ CPI inched lower by -0.1% sequentially in May and is now down in each of the past three months. The YoY trend is barely perceptible at a mere +0.8%. That tells you a thing or two about the true shape of the economy and how corporate pricing power was fading ahead of the tariff war. Jay Powell needs to find a replacement for “solid” to describe the macro backdrop – fast!

We are living through history. Only 0.25% of the time in the past century has the S&P 500 managed to rise nine consecutive days. A 1-in-400 or 3 sigma event! Guess what? Fully 80% of the time this dynamic happened in recessionary environments … not to mention just ahead of the October 1987 crash! Maybe this “bullish” (manic) move isn’t so “bullish” after all!

🚨 Canada’s deficit is worse than you think 🚨
- Current deficit: $61.9B
- New Capital Gains Revenue Assumptions for this year: $6.9B
- Actual deficit: $68.8B
The government's own deficit figures assume $6.9B in revenue THIS YEAR from a proposed capital gains tax increase that hasn’t been passed by Parliament (and likely never will).
Canada's projection is that the deficit will be $27.8B by 2028/29. Minus the $19.3B in capital gains tax increase revenue over the next 5 years? $47.1B.

As expected.
CPI is highly correlated with the money supply (M2) but with a lag.
Here's my updated chart: CPI vs. M2 growth lagged for 16 months.
At current trends, CPI is zero in January 2025 (but then spikes up, so don't get used to it).

The federal government has announced it will raise the price cap for insured mortgages to $1.5M and expand them to 30-year amortizations. This is a demand side boost and inflationary for home prices. Reckless policy.

BREAKING NEWS
CANADA's YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT RATE HITS 14.5%
ONTARIO's HITS 17.5%
AS CANADA CONTINUES TO ADD PEOPLE... BUT DOESNT ADD JOBS
THIS IS A CRISIS!
Canada Stats Hub retweeted
The unemployment rate for Canadians aged 15-24 rose to 13.5% last month, the highest rate seen since 2014 — not counting the pandemic. The employment rate among university students looking for summer jobs is currently the lowest since 1998.
Not only has the economy slowed in recent months, but the job market hasn’t absorbed all the new job seekers after years of record-setting population growth. That mismatch leaves students and young graduates with a dwindling number of job prospects.
Young people have been disproportionately affected by the decline in promotions and a rise in involuntary part-time work, leading many to take on jobs they’re overqualified for.
Experts also point to the rising number of Canadians with degrees in fields that have slowed down hiring in recent months, including finance and professional services.
According to RBC economist Carrie Freestone, new graduates who have difficulty finding their first job can struggle to hit career milestones farther into the future. The good news: hiring could pick up as the Bank of Canada continues to cut interest rates.
