Research by Dr @KarinKjernsmo has shown iridescence in #beetles can act as a form of deceptive colouration as well as #camouflage 🪲
This provides protection from predators.

Scientists have shown that iridescence in #beetles can work as a form of deceptive colouration as well as #camouflage. 🐞
This means iridescence can save prey even after they've been caught, serving both good looks and protection! 😍

Why don't we see any scarlet squirrels and turquoise tigers? Bright, vivid colours are rare amongst mammals. @Gizmodo recently asked a panel of folks working on animal colouration, including Innes, Tim and myself from @Camo_Lab, why that might be the case.
