I consider indexing to be both information/knowledge work and a creative process, re-interpreting and restructuring a whole book. Automated indexes are still not very good. Any further thoughts, fellow indexers and @djbduncan?

To celebrate our first in-person gathering in four years, the theme of the 2023 conference will be "Editors In Real Life." We’ve spent two years in the virtual world, but now it’s time to re-establish the human component in editing. #Editors23 @EditorsCanada

This month I'm taking every day to thank something in my editing world. Because I just had occasion to pull it up, today I'm thankful for the Conscious Language Toolkit for Editors from @RedPenRabbit. Such a helpful resource! #AmEditing

PSA—reach out to people you may want to work with next year! It's never too early to start that chat, but it can easily become way too late. I book in advance, as do my friends, so we can't really help you or refer you when you need a service asap. Plan ahead!

When I catch a typo, I get a little hit of dopamine and think, "Ooh, tricky one there. Good job, me!" I never feel superior to the author or other editors who might have overlooked it. They had other things to focus on and worry about. We're all doing a great job here.

Folks, please don't ask me to write dissertations and journal articles for you. I can teach you how to write. But I can't do it for you. It constitutes plagiarism and is, therefore, unethical.

Word of the day is the Italian ‘sprezzatura’: a studied nonchalance, implying that something you’ve spent ages on is really nothing all, or responding to a compliment on a carefully-chosen jumper with ‘oh, this old thing?’.

To avoid a hiatus between two vowels in words like ruīna, Latin could add in a /w/ sound. This sneaky sound underwent the general shift of /w/ to /v/ in Italian, turning ruīna into rovina. This is how the name Iōannēs 'John' became Giovanni, and the city of Genua is now Genova.

Hodiē, the Latin word for 'today' (a contration of hōc diē 'on this day'), changed over time into Italian oggi. We even have a bit of evidence for an intermediate stage in this change, as Isidore of Seville remarks in the 7th century that "Italians tend to say ozie for hodie".

Spondēre is a Latin word meaning 'to promise' or 'to give assurance', and someone who does so is a spōnsor. Moreover, a spōnsus/spōnsa, someone promised in marriage, gives us the word 'spouse', while to promise in return or just answer someone is to respondēre – hence 'respond'.
