The brand new ECMWF El Niño forecast has just arrived, and it's quite something. It shows the El Niño peaking around or just above 4°C in December. But what's most notable is the duration of record-breaking conditions, with with many members remaining above 3°C into April!

Pockets of peak color emerged rapidly last week in the high country of CO, nearly two weeks earlier than normal! While leaf peeping is already well underway, we expect fall colors to be best over the next 2-3 weeks as large swaths of aspens that remain green begin to change.

I have been putting ChatGPT Astra through a pretty ridiculous test of building broadcast weather software for NCSU. This kind of thing would have probably taken me 2-5 years of full-time development trying to learn Direct3D. I built this in a weekend.

‼️ Heartbreaking video from Nepal. Villages overrun by raging flood. Hundreds of people are missing. The cause: Likely due to a Glacier Lake or dam in the mountain’s above bursting free from a snow-rock landslide, with water cascading down the hills. It took place on the Nepal-China border - that was initiated by a 4.4 Earthquake. That’s where the evidence points now, and if so, it’s called a Glacier Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF). They are more common now-a-days as glaciers continue to melt and hold more water. See image below.

This image helps explain what happened along the Nepal–Tibet border. According to reports, a magnitude 4.4 earthquake on the Tibetan side triggered a massive ice avalanche, which then led to the flash flooding of the Bhotekoshi River in Nepal. Around 1,000 people are missing, and many have been killed.

Image is AI-generated and has China/Nepal labels reversed. USGS later clarified there was no earthquake — the M4.4 signal was produced by the glacial collapse and debris flow itself (now listed as M5.2 landslide). earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/ev… bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

2”+ hail is possible in eastern Colorado Wednesday. Storms may be isolated near the Front Range and I-25, but any that form could turn severe. The threat grows farther east, where very large hail could damage cars, roofs and windows.
