New article by our curator, Dr. @CorrieMoreau, and @CornellEEB grad students @meganbarkdull_, @ColleenEcology, and @MoniquePipkin- parents and kids, check it out!
Do you know a kid interested in nature, science, or natural history museums? @meganbarkdull_ @ColleenEcology @MoniquePipkin and I wrote a fun paper for @FrontiersIn Young Minds titled "Natural History Collections: What Are They and Why Do We Need Them?"
kids.frontiersin.org/article…

ALT Figure 3 from the publication showing: Three distinct aspects of natural history collections. First, scientists use natural history collections to help with research. Second, the public interacts with natural history collections through museum exhibits, to learn more about biodiversity. Third, you can help collections yourself, by collecting and donating specimens, or volunteering online (Figure credit: Charlotte Welker Holden)!

Thanks sooo much to @EntsocAmerica for supporting entomologists that are also caregivers. This is so encouraging! 🦋🐞🐝🪰

I'm sitting on the ground watching extremely small phorid flies harass individual ants, like not even ants can go outside without some little thing bothering them

As an immunocompromised journalist the framing of “prepare to get sick” blows my mind. Why can’t we frame these stories as “here’s how to lessen the risk of getting sick AND be ready for if/when it does happen?” Both are important! – at Buffalo, NY

It’s time to stock up on tissues, bingeable TV options and Covid-19 tests. Yes, many signs are pointing to a Covid-19 summer surge – although one that’s far less intense than what emerged the past few summers. cnn.it/3rUHrnp

A statement from the Labor Politics Group on APSA's deeply disappointing decision: We continue to ask @APSAtweets to move online in keeping with @UNITEHERE11's request and are organizing alternatives. Please read and share widely! docs.google.com/document/d/1…

I am on APSA Council and a number of us argued hard for honoring the strike, but lost. Also, the Council did not vote on the statement, it was issued after the meeting today. The statement does not reflect my views (it's so tone deaf). Sorry we failed

Check out our new paper surveying honey bee pathogens in native pollinators! We found that Nosema ceranae and Melissococcus plutonius (the disease-causing agent of European Foulbrood) are more prevalent in some species of native bees than in honey bees. doi.org/10.1016/j.jip.2023.1…

I like the detail that they might have resurrected an extinct species but they aren’t actually sure because the vast majority of living nematode species are undescribed so it might just be a common species that is still around

BREAKING: U-M escalates broad policing powers to intimidate a union member at their home. This comes after months of intimidating picketers on the lines, sending so-called "campus police" miles away from campus to surveil union pickets, and detaining members. Our statement:

I’d like my employer to know that my individual preference, as a disabled, chronically-ill person, about masking is that they continue to require mandatory masking because voluntary, one-way masking as the university’s norm is just eugenics, poorly veiled.

Cornell grads: what could you do with a 45.6k or 40k assistantship?
➡️Dental bills?

@SW_Columbia just raised the bar for all of us. They showed us what union power means for worker wages. Pton doesn't want grads to connect the dots, so they're throwing money at the problem. GREAT—we love that. But don't forget: union power raised the bar. 3/6
