What are the functional roles of 3D genome organization? In a new preprint led by @_prashantbhat, we demonstrate a critical role for dynamic 3D organization of genomic DNA around nuclear speckles in controlling the efficiency of mRNA splicing. biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

BMP party in @CellSystemsCP hosted by @ElowitzLab
Many intercellular communication systems (BMP, Notch, Wnt, FGF, etc) use sets of promiscuously interacting ligand and receptor variants rather than seemingly simpler one-to-one architectures. Why? Our 2 papers grappling w/this question just out in @CellSystemsCP

1/ Excited to share our preprint from @arjunrajlab on clampFISH 2.0: a method for rapid, multiplexed RNA imaging (e.g. 10 genes in 1 million cells in ~1.25 days) @pennbioeng biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/… If you’ve done conventional single-molecule RNA FISH, you’ll know it is slow…

Excited to see our paper finally out! A co-equal collaboration with Alex Sakers (twitterless) in the @LabSeale We sought to identify the cell types involved in making energy burning fat cells around blood vessels.

It is my great pleasure to introduce *Dr.* @laurenbeck131, who just successfully defended her thesis! I have been so lucky to work with her on her awesome organoid constraint work for the past few years. She is brilliant, talented, and has taught me so much about perseverance.

Happy to share our latest work just out at @CellSystemsCP ➡️ bit.ly/34yBDC6. We discovered a single-cell signaling mechanism by which melanoma cells can survive and slowly proliferate despite being targeted with precision anti-cancer drugs RAF/MEK inhibitors (1/6)

Excited to share: Defining the lineage of thermogenic perivascular adipose tissue in coequal collaboration with Alex Sakers! This study was motivated by our interest in how the body makes energy burning fat cells during development and adulthood. biorxiv.org/cgi/content/shor…

Very proud of our 1st graduate student @jloops22 for her leadership throughout this project, and MD/PhD candidate @dsjpark for major contributions! Let's go @ericjoycelab!
Excited for this to be out! Here, we explored the relationship between variable TAD boundaries, cohesin activity, and gene regulation. Led by @jloops22 @dsjpark @SonCNguyen Yemin Lan, Zhuxuan Xu, and Rebecca Yunker nature.com/articles/s41588-0…

Recently at a conference a good-intentioned professor asked me, “Shouldn’t we just lower our standards if we want to diversify our faculty?” If we are honest with ourselves, this thinking is widespread. Allies can help by combating the idea that diversity=lowering of quality.

And some can say well you’ve become a professor. You’ve been able to rise above this noise. Its true. I’m a resilient optimist. But do we really want a system that selects not for innovation/creativity but for Black scientists who can tolerate racial hostility and isolation?

If you think your rights have been violated while protesting, try to do the following: Write down everything you remember including officers' badge or patrol car numbers. Get bystanders' contact information for witnesses. Take photos of any injuries. aclu.org/know-your-rights/pr…

Planning your seminar series, conferences, symposia for post-covid? Any black speakers? Or same black speakers from elite University X being recycled? Or maybe instead of faculty invites, could be some talented black grad students or postdocs that could give excellent talks.
