As part of my thesis project on the #transitiontoadulthood for #neurodivergent young people, I've tried to summarise my findings into three guides. These are very light touch and intended to be conversation starters - please use & share if useful!

I really like this structure for thinking about how to support play.
How do we interact with children in #play without interfering? How do we deepen learning without imposing our own ideas? Lovely morning with @CALAchildcare yesterday exploring the SELFIE steps as a way to do this Can’t overstate the power of seeing & enjoying children’s play

The desire for therapy assumes that a young person can easily open up to a stranger, that they can put their thoughts and feelings into words, and that they have a coherent sense of their life story. Relationships in school and the community can be far more natural and powerful. – at Garvary, Northern Ireland
The relationships we build with our young people can make the world of a difference. The majority of therapeutic moments don't take place in therapy, they take place in schools. Day in day out relational moments make a difference. 🧠🌱

We say this over & over but authorities aren't interested in this narrative. Just look at the numbers though. Any discussion on barriers to school attendance ought to be focussing on this. @Helen_Amass @AliJaneMoore @cjayanetti @darshnasoni @SianGriffiths6 @BBCWomansHour
Thank you to @ItsEmilyKaty and @CarrieGrant1 for highlighting this powerful research - our wonderful 12yo ND daughter created this graphic to highlight the stats - hope this is OK to share! #NotASchoolSkiver #AutismAwareness @teamsquarepeg @AutisticGirls_ scienceopen.com/document?vid…

Important large scale, multi-national, and naturalistic study. Key finding: Children who hear more adult talk speak more (and SES, gender, and multilingualism have minimal impact)
Why do some children learn language faster than others? Are girls faster than boys? And does learning two languages slow you down? New PNAS study of 1001 children in 12 countries across 6 continents pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.23……. Paywalled so preprint here osf.io/preprints/psyarxiv/fj…

The biggest barrier to student achievement is the fact that we have defined achievement for young people as doing better than their peers. It’s not possible for them all to succeed when succeed means ‘do better than the others’.
The biggest barrier to student achievement is adults not focused enough on student achievement.

I asked autistic people and ADHDers about the challenges they faced at school and what helped or would have helped. Out of over 400 responses, these were the most common themes. 👇🏻

1/8 Epistemic authority means valuing the lived experiences of those who share them with us. Where we fail in this, we see another human as being less, that our opinion is more. This power imbalance in action is so wrong, dangerous & is costing our neurodivergent YP dearly

Love this.
If a young person is opening up to you about their mental health, treat yourself as the reader of a book rather than an author. Avoid interrupting and give them your full attention. Create space for them to tell their story.
