🚨PEOPLE: It is really happening. The Minneapolis City Council *just* announced their intent to disband the Police Department & replace it w/ a new community-led system that truly prioritizes the safety & health of community. Transformation. Not “reform.”theappeal.org/minneapolis-ci…

This is entirely the fault of @MACorrections All of this unnecessary sickness and suffering. DOC totally refused to release even elderly and sick women, AND completely mismanaged the prison by screwing up quarantine units, waiting to test, and this brutal ineffective lockdown.
MCI Framingham now has highest number of prisoners testing positive for coronavirus of any Massachusetts prison. DOC reports today 66 prisoners tested positive - up from 28 prisoners yesterday. 14 staff there also positive.

In other words: 166,000 people are being put in solitary confinement for the next two weeks. The trauma this will inflict is unimaginable. The choice cannot be between mass death and mass solitary confinement. We must release people to be with their families.
The federal Bureau of Prisons says effective tomorrow (April 1), all inmates will be confined to their cells for 14 days to try to stem the spread of the Coronavirus.

Sheriffs have the legal authority to release people right now. All of them deny this. You can just read the laws yourself. Sheriffs have authority to move incarcerated people to other secure places if a disease breaks out - aka move them to their houses. G.L. c. 126, § 26

HUGE new reporting from @WBUR on jail deaths & medical neglect. 195 deaths in #mapoli jails from '08-'18. Eerily timely reporting giving the crisis of morbidity & mortality our public officials are risking by failing to decarcerate. #FreeThemAll Read: wbur.org/investigations/2020…
