At Parliament House today launching ⁦@NTEUnion⁩’s third wage theft report which found underpayments are set to explode to $382 million. We need an urgent parliamentary inquiry into university wage theft. ⁦@sallymcmanus⁩ ⁦@LachlanClohesy⁩ ⁦@sarahecroberts⁩

Hark! Is that the sound of a Senate committee inquiry being readied? The NTEU wants a parly inquiry into unis underpaying staff. Senator Sheldon (Lab-NSW) who chairs upper house educ committees, tweets uni execs "need to be held accountable"

After being dragged to the Federal Court, Uni of Melbourne admits refusing work to a casual academic who simply asked to be paid for hours she worked. I wish this was an isolated incident but we know insecure work fuels exploitation right across our sector standard.net.au/story/854505…

We also have to consider the precarity of employment in #highered. If the bulk of educators and equity staff in universities are casual or on fixed-term contracts, how can they make others feel included when they themselves feel excluded by the institution? @seos895

This amounts to a total of another $4.4m in stolen wages from workers in our sector. Despite the huge figure this shockingly comes in at only 10th place on our table of the worst offenders.
Yet another uni owes staff for unpaid wages. Fair Work Ombudsman reports UTS owes 2777 people an average $1590 - one person is owed $209 000 (yes $209 000).

UTS underpaid one staffer $209 000. It wasn't a billion but Uni Sydney still made a motza in '22. Campus Morning Mail for Friday @ bit.ly/3LZSJgM

From the end of 2023 there will be restrictions on the use of 2+ year fixed-term contracts & renewals/rolling contracts. This could have big impacts on the 45,000+ #highered contract staff unless the Award explicitly allows rolling & long contracts (1/3) fairwork.gov.au/newsroom/new…

You misunderstood us when we told you we valued quality teaching. This means that students are happy with the course, not that they learned something useful. Now go make your students happy!

Lots of presentations at #HERDSA2022 on student equity, societal inequality & fragility, but casual staff "Tertiary Tetris" presentation reminds us of inequality within #highered institutions
