This is fascinating from Ray Dalio.
Gold ETFs currently account for 87% of his portfolio.
As he likes to say:
“If you don’t own gold, you know neither history nor economics.”

Ray Dalio's family office sticks to what he believes and says in interviews - the decline of fiat currencies. Hence, he holds 87% in Gold ETFs.

Last week’s inflation data reinforce the same message.
We are likely in for a decade of sticky inflation.
Yet central banks will inevitably have to cut rates to keep governments’ borrowing costs manageable.
That combination could have profound implications for hard assets.

BREAKING: Ukraine has just struck the St. Petersburg oil port and set it ablaze, with massive fires rising, one of Russia's largest fuel storage and export facilities.
Zelensky said two days ago that Ukraine will restart major strikes on Russian energy. "The block on attacking refineries is out. We're done."

If gold miners were a standalone sector, they would be the cheapest group in this comparison of US equities.
Roughly a 10% free cash flow yield.
No other sector shown comes close.

SIGNIFICANT: The UKMTO’s monthly report has just been filed, and one line stands out:
“UKMTO struggling to accurately report true number of attacks with majority of vessels attacked refusing to report to UKMTO.”
I’m sorry, you said MAJORITY? As in >50%?
If this statement holds true for October, that means you’re taking about nearly SIXTY vessels that would have been struck by Iran in the first two weeks of the month…
The U.S. can’t defend these vessel AT ALL.

As mentioned yesterday, this is the floor. Rough week for equities, but physical is firm. Up from here.

The macro repricing of energy is now underway. Check out today's move in long dated oil - that's calendar 2027 WTI. When long dated oil moves this strongly in tandem with energy equities making new ATHs, financial markets need to listen. This is not a transient spike in prompt oil. It's far more structural. Get long, buckle your seat belt, and hang on for the ride.

Transocean has just released a new SEC filing that brings very good news.
1. Banks are ready to finance the new $RIG / $VAL
The new credit facility increases from $510 million to $750 million, and its maturity is extended from 2028 to 2031, provided the merger is completed.
2. Banks offered more money than Transocean asked for.
This is particularly interesting to me. The credit facility was oversubscribed, meaning banks were willing to provide more financing than Transocean requested. Heavily indebted offshore companies don't get this, but my readers have known for a long time that RIG can handle its debt relatively easily. This is just further proof.
3. Less debt.
Transocean has repaid $165 million of debt carrying an 8% interest rate, reducing future interest expenses.
4. And here is something particularly interesting. Shareholder returns.
Section 6.25 of the credit agreement contains provisions allowing future dividend payments and share buybacks.
Think about that for a moment.
A company that spent years struggling with debt now has banks offering more money than it requested, is repaying expensive debt, and has a credit agreement that allows for future returns of capital to shareholders.
Debt goes down, moat goes up, and future cash goes to shareholders.
Cheers, Sandro
