Javed Akhtar’s 'Jaise' in Ek Ladki Ko Dekha from this movie is a literary masterpiece. Ek ladki ko dekha toh aisa laga jaise… and then begins a beautiful chain of imagination, 'Jaise khilta gulaab, jaise shayar ka khwaab, jaise ujli kiran'. The girl is never really described. Every jaise opens another window. Maan lo ki… tasavvur karo… One image is never enough, because imagination does not want to stop. Perhaps that is why 'jaise' sounds so musical. English ka 'like' feels too functional. 'As if' comes closer, it also lets reality loosen a little and imagination take over. Language waale may call it 'utpreksha' alankaar, with a hint of upma or simile inside every comparison. And the repeated jaise at the beginning of each image becomes 'punaravritti' or 'anaphora' in English. But you don’t need to know the terminology to feel its effect, as 'jaise' creates the imagination, and its repetition creates the music. Javed sir anyways loves such endless chains. In Shankar's Breathless song, 'Koi jo mila toh mujhe aisa lagta tha "jaise" , meri saari duniya me geeton ki rut.. jaise kahin chaandi ki paayal goonje, jaise koi chhip ke sitaar bajaaye...' again opens the gate, and one image keeps creating another. He can do it even without jaise, 'manzilein hain toh faasle hain, faasle hai toh raste hai…'in famous rotomac ad. Side note : Masst movie ka 'Puchho Na Yaar Kya Hua' also enjoys an imagination chain, phir ye hua, woh hua, jaane kya kya hua.
