Chanda sooraj is such a top notch song by Rahman. Such high audio quality blessing into the ears ( ohh that year of 1997). Arguably one of the greatest songs ever. Jugalbandi ka pinnacle. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan proves how he is ustaado ka ustaad. Taansen of Qawwals. His sargams taans aalaps shows a glimpse of his beautiful soul. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan ki aawaz ko un bachho ki angrezi prayer like aawaz ke saath mix karke that start is pure goosebumps. Adds to the contrast and international appeal. And the song's actual lyrics have not even started, but we are already transported. Rahman gels his voice, pitch and texture so very well with Nusrat, that their voice becomes one. He turned his own Tamil song Porale, a romantic melodic folk sounding song, sung by Unni Menon and Sujatha Mohan into a Nusrat sufi qawwal flavored global song. He adds a western pop elemnt in it, which is represented by Rahman's voice. USP of the song is this duet nature of Rahman Nusrat, layered with kids voices. You can't resist singing this song, dancing on it or crying with its emotion. Very infectious song. Starts with guitar as western elemnt for kids. Western beats transform to Tabla around 2:20. Tabla is exclusively for Nusrat. Pop, guitar and synth is for kids and Rahman. Mehboob 's choice of words are so accessible yet very different from what is previously written in this category. His thoughts and expressions connects so well. Nusrat represents dard when he sings, 'Rishte badi mushkilo se bante hai yahan pe lekin, Tootne ke liye bass ek hi lamha. Ishq dava hai har ek dard ki. Zanjeer ishq hai har ek rishte ki.' It praises ishq with adjectives before anand bakshi did in Taal with Rahman. It is difficult to classify a rahman song. Its pop, an anthem, yet has qawwali and primarily pop flavor and quite a deviation from the original tamil romantic duet. This is phenommenal reinterpretation by a composer of his own melody. Not a single second of the song is unnecessary. So crisp. 2 verses following similar melodical structure. Chanda suraj acting as mukhda. Kids start and end the song. Nusrat is the emtional navigator with those taans, sargams, aalaps. Rahman is the orchestrator and adds style and appeal. Rahman and Nusrat sit one layer on top of the lyrics. They focus more on emotional expression. Like Nusrat sings aalam as laalam which also could fit into lyrics. 'Rounak ishq hai saare aalam ki' in Nusrat's voice is heaven & my favorite line with that timing. Proves how Rahman's music is magic. Breakdown of singing portions: Total Runtime 5 minutes 53 seconds 00:00 to 00:50s - Intro Kids : Starting chorus with guitar Nusrat enters with aalap followed by a taan: 15s-50s. Aalap 15 to 35s. My favorite taan sounding like da ga tha pa from 35s to 50s. 50s to 1:35 - 1st verse / Mukhda Rahman(Pop beats for Rahman): Chanda suraj laakhon taare hain jab tere hi yeh saare, Kis baat par hothi hai phir thakraarein Keenchi hai lakkeere is jameen pe par na keencho dekho, Beech mein do dilon ke yeh deewaarein Duniya mein kahin bhi, dard se koyi bhi Nusrat: Duniya mein kahin bhi, dard se koyi bhi Thadpe to humko yahan pe Together, with Nusrat as prominent: Ehsaas uske zakhmon ka ho ke, Apna bhi dil bhar bhar aaye roye aankhein 1:35 to 2:00 - Interlude Nusrat's sargam and kids choir 2:00 to 3:00 - 2nd verse Rahman: Doori kyon dilon mein rahe faasle kyon badhte rahe, Pyaari hai zindagi hai pyaara jahaan Nusrat: Rishte badi mushkilon se Bante hai yahaan pe lekin Tootne ke liye bas ek hi lamha (Tabla enters for Nusrat) Nusrat: Ishq dava hai har ek dard ki Zanjeer ishq hai har ek rishte ki Rahman: Ishq saari hadhon ko tod daale Ishq to duniya ko pal mein mita bhi de Together : Ishq hai jo saare jahaan ko aman bhi de Nusrat's final killer line: Ronaq ishq se hai saare aalam ki 3:00 to 3:35 - Mukhda again Nusrat this time with chanda suraj: Chanda suraj laakhon taare hain jab tere hi yeh saare, Kis baat par hothi hai phir thakraarein
The outro of Gurus of Peace is pure audio nirvana on a proper set of IEMs or HPs. The layering here is unreal: guitar riffs, hypnotic bass groove, floating synths sounds and Nusrat saab’s sargam...uffff delicious... #arrahman

Kheenchi hai lakkeere is jameen pe par na kheencho dekho, Beech mein do dilon ke yeh deewaarein Duniya mein kahin bhi, dard se koyi bhi Rahman joins in with last emotional cry... Dard se koi bhi 3:38 to 5:30 - Phenomenal Outro. Characteristic sound of the whole album. Kids verse snap and primarily Nusrat's Sargam Kids laughter to end with Nusrat's faint echo. Happiness and bliss.

One of the reasons of artists changing their songs in live performances could be that though audience want nostalgia and reliving the past but the artist could be performing it for the thousandth time, and want to reinterpret it as personal growth or fun or just a change. Its annoying to dance repeatedly like a monkey when creative juices could motivate you for fresh and new. Bob Dylan often famously used to changed his song setup or arrangement or style in live performances. And audience reaction was mixed. And audience is right too after paying those tickets, after carrying that song for years inside them. Hari arguably is famous for experimenting in not so pleasant ways. Audience, listeners and fans love and adore the song often more than the artist himself. For artist, love went pro max when he or she was giving birth to the song. But now that song is released into the world, the baby is an adult now, and its another child out of dozen others for the artist. Audience and fan memorize the lyrics and song better afterwards than some of these artists themselves. The artist moves on. The audience is beautifully and willingly stuck. It is the similar phenomenon when an artist gets tagged as villain or comedian or side actor due to that famous first act. Its a trap. Like when you cooked something great for the first time and now that becomes your brand even though you are more than that. Creation is a continuous process and even though audience stops enjoying dev anand yet he kept on making those movies. Perfect balance probably is when artist and fan both can enjoy but never always guaranteed.
Hariharan is so talented that he knows how to kill his own song :)

Great relationships arguably need a lot of investment of your time. Be it marriage/love, parenting, friends or family. And yes, they may need some sacrifice of your personal space and priorities too, especially the deeper relationships. Spending time together and doing things together or even just doing nothing together is how we could create friendship even within parenting or marriage or family. Friendship and love are common elements of all relationships. That christian way of giving unconditionally may help as well. The initial phase of any relationship is especially crucial where you lay the foundation, where you shape the personality of your relationship. Making & having dinner together & that family time weekend with your kids and your spouse for those first 18 years creates that awesome bonding. I mean till kids go their separate ways. Prayer time, rituals, every little chore counts. Thats why its difficult to make great friendships in later stage of life, as you need time spent together. Ultimately, great relationships need shared time, shared experiences, and shared lives.
Parents, we need to talk about parenting. Some parents barely do anything with their kids anymore. No singing and dancing together, no family movie nights, no painting, no arts and crafts, no board games, no sitting around talking about life. Instead, a screen becomes the babysitter, and everyone wonders why their kids struggle with basic social interactions. And before anyone jumps in with “my child is just shy,” let me say this: being shy and not being taught basic manners are two completely different things. I was SUPER shy growing up, too. But I was still taught how to greet adults, answer a question, speak respectfully to a teacher, say please and thank you, and hold a simple conversation when necessary. You don't have to force a shy child to become the loudest person in the room. You don't have to shame them for being quiet or having a different personality. But you DO have to teach them basic life skills. Teach them how to communicate. Read with them. Play with them. Let them help you cook. Put on some music and dance around the living room. Make a mess with paint. Watch a movie together and actually TALK about it afterward. Ask them questions. Let them ask questions. Teach them how to express themselves, how to listen, how to show respect, and how to interact with people outside their own little world. Your job as a parent isn't just to keep your child fed, clothed, entertained, and safe. It's to prepare them for the world they'll eventually have to navigate without you. Children don't learn every social skill automatically just because they grow older. They learn through practice, example, patience, and interaction. And yes, some children genuinely struggle with social situations, and they deserve understanding rather than judgment. But using “they're just shy” to avoid helping a child develop confidence and communication skills isn't doing them any favors. You don't need expensive toys, elaborate vacations, or a perfect Pinterest-worthy childhood. Sometimes, the best parenting happens in the simplest moments: singing in the kitchen, making a terrible painting, playing a board game, or teaching your child how to look up and say, “Good morning, how are you?” Be present. Get involved. Teach them. Raise children who know how to live in the real world, not just scroll through a screen.

Thats why probably Mirza Ghalib says हज़ारों ख़्वाहिशें ऐसी कि हर ख़्वाहिश पे दम निकले, बहुत निकले मेरे अरमान, लेकिन फिर भी कम निकले। And for one who are worthy you use 'thousand' in a different way, like Khaled Hosseini did 'For you a thousand times over'

BJP, along with the RSS and its wider ecosystem of followers, gradually built a political narrative that equated the party with Modi, Modi with leadership, leadership with nationalism, nationalism with patriotism, patriotism with Hinduism, Hinduism with Indian culture, and ultimately all of it with the very idea of India. The result was a fusion of identities where criticism of any one component could be perceived as criticism of everything else. And once political loyalty becomes inseparable from cultural, religious, and national identity, disagreement stops being merely political. It becomes personal.
Speaking against @BJP4India is NOT antinational Bjp isn't india. India isn't Bjp. India existed before BJP. India will exist After BJP You have to decide whether you are willing to STAND UP & SPEAK UP to protect our democracy! Your Silence is why tyranny continues @Cockroachisback

Interesting how parenting, education, affluence and personal autonomy play a big role in health, nutrition, fitness vs obesity. Lets call them the big four. Parenting lays the foundation of lifelong health. While genetics is something not under your control, but parents can inculcate habits of nutrition and fitness pretty early. Also as per data, Childhood obesity often tracks into adulthood, and lifelong nutrition and fitness habits often develop early. Better education generally improves health, nutrition and fitness awareness. Affluence then helps you choose the better resources. This also buys you time and money to invest in yourselves. Personal autonomy comes easier in places like america as culturally individuality is valued more. This especially help women a lot, especially with patriarchal roles as in many desi homes. All four together play a pivotal role in our health and fitness. American middle aged women vs desi women's contrast helps us understand this better. American women with higher education and affluence tend to have lower obesity prevalence as per stats. Many also seem to maintain a youthful appearance even at older ages. In india even with education and affluence, cultural norms and patriarchal roles may give us a hard time. For women, growing older traditionally means getting further absorbed into the roles of mother, mother in law and grandmother. And sometimes even wealth doesn't buy freedom from those expectations. As per stats, on avg, Desi women spend close to 5 hours everyday on domestic work compared to half an hour by men. Even applies to elderly desi women. Kitchen work is often equated mistakenly with health and fitness. Khud ke liye time comes last. America isn't free from this inequality either. But the gap seems less. American women spend 2 and a half hour compared to 1 and a half hour by american men in household activities. In affluent American communities, women seem to have more freedom to maintain their identity beyond family roles. Walking, gym, swimming, Pilates, tennis, pickleball, traveling, dressing well, socializing, taking care of themselves. Life doesn't necessarily revolve around family even at 60 or 70. (This is now a common phenomenon for urban desis too.) I am always surprised to see how many american parents are good swimmers or are so much swimming or sports aware, as they had a better sports and fitness exposure as kids. Fifth dimension: Suburban infrastructure and where you live also plays a big role, as many of these parks, sidewalks, walking trails, swimming pools, and health fitness events like a 5k run for community or company, charity races or school sports could be part of free or cheap public and community access depending on where you are. And this ties to how developed countries seem to provide more means to be fit. Community infra for fitness and health shows how fitness is a group objective...the whole family trying to be fit together is possibly easier, the whole community together trying to be fit is inspirational and contagious. School's focus(& budget) on sports and fitness helps a long way too. So fitness and health culture can be the sixth factor. All these factors overlap too. Like culture and place you belong to often try to dictate personal autonomy as well as health infra. Of course, this doesn't represent all American or Indian women or men. There's also a selection bias in whom we observe, and American society has its own pressure to remain youthful and attractive. But the larger cultural difference is interesting. Perhaps the real luxury isn't staying slim or looking young at 70. It's having the health, time, money and independence to continue living a life of your own at 70. Without feeling guilty about it.
I am at my family function and I can’t help but notice how many of the married women are clearly overweight. A lot of them are struggling just to sit down on the floor properly, walking in that slow penguin style or already complaining about knee pain. It just makes me wonder why so many people completely ignore the most basic thing i.e. their own health and keep chasing everything else instead.

Azadi by Dub Sharma & Divine is such a treat to listen to. Gully Boy album is one of the most unconventional yet successful music of the last couple decades from Hindustani cinema. Its topic around local rappers helped it to achieve that. (Qala/Jubilee by AT is a change of sound as well) Shows how to create great music you need a great story on paper, a great story in mind. Hawa me nahi banta music. Sirf talent se nahi banta music. The original azadi song by dub sharma piggybacks on students movement. Even Kanhaiya & student 's dialogue seems to be inspired from earlier movements as pointed by writer Kamla Bhasin. So chain of inspirations can co exist and vary in implementation. From Gullyboy album, my super fav three are Jingostan : Smart satirical lyrics with the perfect rythm. Azadi : Love the youthful energy and again the awesome writing. And what a kadak style of singing man... Lest I not forget the winner TrainSong by the unmatchable Raghu_Dixit .Whatta composition by MidivalPunditz & karshkalemusic . Always the frontrunners of fusions with pop & classic. More details on azadi track and history where writer is critical of gully boy version which i thought was needless huffpost.com/archive/in/entr…
Since Kanhaiya is trending, here is Gully Boy. The year is 2019. The pandemic was yet to lockdown our country. This is Divine's take on the original by Dub Sharma. This was Ranveer Singh as Murad before he was Hamza. youtu.be/4nCshJBODT4?si=oF1W…

Shows how religious expression and traditions can vary at personal, family and regional level. Most people approach religion for the cultural aspect, the rituals, the traditions which could have variations for every other family, and every other individual. Culturally rich societies have multiple ways of celebration and rituals. Rituals feel personally close to us when they flow bottom up.
Yesterday in office, a few of us were talking about Navratri and Durga Puja. Somehow it went to food. Couple of guys from northern part were proudly sharing how strictly they fast. No onion, no garlic, full nine days. Then everyone looked at the Bengali guy in the group, from Tripura. I felt a little awkward. I know Bengali culture a bit and didn't want him put on the spot. He smiled and said calmly, "For us Bengalis, Maa Durga is our daughter. She comes home once a year. When your daughter comes home, you don't fast. You feast."

Marwari/Mewari for childhood nostalgia. Marathi & Bengali to connect with friends, in their first language. Punjabi & Tamil for musical connection. All purely for communication & cultural connection. And a pakka local Malayalam accent, to feel more rooted.
if you could add 3 languages to your brain overnight, which ones would you pick?

Such genuine and amazing songs in his AT Azaad and Unreleased segments on youtube. Shows how movies pamper our musical taste. A hero and a video and a situation ki aadat lag jaati hai, so good musicians often can't reach audience continuously. Amit Trivedi is holding both filmy and non filmy flags arguably well. Still resonates amongst the other noise.
Anurag Kashyap approved all his songs for Dev D but working with Karan Johar at Dharma was a whole different ball game! 😂🎶 Our next guest, Amit Trivedi, shares a hilarious take on the difference between the two creative experiences. Same composer, two very different worlds! 🎙️✨ #AmitTrivedi #AnuragKashyap #KaranJohar #GameChangersWithKomalNahta
