Tragic news out of Canada 🇨🇦. Deepest sympathies for our @CanadianForces colleagues, as they still assess circumstances and casualties.
It is with profound sadness that we confirm that a fire incident at CFB Wainwright on October 17 resulted in fatalities and injuries. Our immediate priority is supporting those affected and notifying next of kin. canada.ca/en/department-nati…

It is a shame we have lost such civility in our politics today. A man like Senator McCain can never be replaced. @McCainInstitute
On this day in 2008, during a town hall-style presidential campaign event, Senator McCain shut down false claims about his presidential opponent, defending then-Senator Obama as a “decent family man, citizen, that I just happen to have disagreements with ... That’s what this campaign is all about.”

cnn.com/2026/10/09/politics/… Nidal Hassan sees himself as a "Soldier of Allah." A public, livestreamed execution would, in his mind, vindicate his twisted self-image, and it would be a useful propaganda video for ISIS and al-Qaeda and their affiliated groups around the world.

Good morning. USCENTCOM update + DoD IG report reveals Iran war now costs nearly $5 Billion per month. This is at least $1B higher than SECDEF testified in July. (This doesn’t include impact to U.S. economy.) War is expensive; taxpayers pay the price; service members / veterans endure the long-term consequences. media.defense.gov/2026/Sep/0… appropriations.senate.gov/he… @BenFreemanDC @QuincyInst @RStatecraft
Centcom just released an estimate of Iran war costs: $43.6 billion. Monday, the DoD IG released a cost estimate that was $10 billion less than this, but covered two fewer months. Translation: Ongoing Iran war costs have been ~$5 billion/month, much higher than we've been told.

A military-dominated foreign policy, without clearly defined political goals and adequately resourced civilian institutions will remain costly in both dollars and lives. responsiblestatecraft.org/ve… @QuincyInst @RStatecraft

The gap between operational military success and strategic political outcomes can be significant and is rarely, if at all, closed by increased military activity. Treating the military as the first tool of statecraft, while the other instruments of national security are under-resourced, will remain costly in both dollars and lives. responsiblestatecraft.org/ve… @RStatecraft @QuincyInst

“Treating the military as the first tool of statecraft, while the other instruments of national security are under-resourced, will remain costly in both dollars and lives.” One of the central arguments in my new @RStatecraft piece. The work of @CostsOfWar provides important context for understanding those costs.

I am announcing my retirement from the @USArmy. Thirty years ago today, May 10, 1996, I was commissioned as a 2LT of Infantry at @ASU. The lesson that stayed with me: it’s all about the people. This transition is not an ending. It is a continuation. news.asu.edu/b/20260428-care…
