It’s been fabulous to watch Charlestown South PS and other schools in the EAST Network go from strength to strength, demonstrating that explicit teaching is effective for all students. This approach is now being promoted in all NSW Public Schools. smh.com.au/national/nsw/this…

When I worked in a small, rural primary school, just over 1 hours drive out of Canberra, I provided intervention or support to 75% of students. This is WAY above the 25% statistic everyone quotes for Aussie kids. We need to update the stats and get $$ + professionals out there 🙏

The evidence shows a consistent, whole-school approach to classroom management works best. Students know what to expect, teachers know what to do, schools are calmer. Thanks to St Clare's College, @DrTimMcDonald1 and @JennyDonovan2 for speaking with me. canberratimes.com.au/story/8…

That's the problem with online teacher resources now - they can still sell what DOES NOT help children learn to read and spell effectively. My old school was using this, with good intentions, just a few years ago 😞 Bring on the Decoding Dragon instead - first and foremost #SoR
It’s 2024 and a parent at our clinic was given this bookmark with a bunch of PM readers by her well-meaning but ill-informed school in an effort to help her teach her child to read. All of this eagle eyein’, fish lippin’, stretchy snakein’, monkey chunkin’, lion tryin’, dolphin flippin’ and frog skippin’ is a crock of 💩, and not consistent with teaching kids to read properly: readingdoctor.com.au/how-sho… @FIVEfromFIVE @PamelaSnow2 @Dr_emmagrace @LisaFurlong212 @tserry2504 @buckingham_j

😞 We need to help our Australian young people and those struggling with device or social media addiction... Something more prevalent in neurodiverse groups and apparently in 15-year-old girls 🙏🧠💔

Great episode addressing some MTSS misconceptions: "Screening & diagnostic don't overlap. Screeners must be short & predictive. Diagnostic tests are specific, usually not timed & are linked to instruction, telling you what to teach next. E.g. PAST is not a screener" @sstollar6
🤯 This is why Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) isn't working in YOUR school! 🤯 MTSS was designed to be a systemic model to merge general ed and special ed, aimed to PREVENT reading failure. 💭 Instead, we are doing a lot of INTERVENTION rather than PREVENTION. 🤔

"Teach the behaviour you want to see..." That's EDI of social and emotional skills, sooooo key for improved classroom learning and student wellbeing. Kids need boundaries!! And a lot of love with it. Thanks @BennettTraining for the lighthearted reminder on The Project 👏💪🧠💛
Behaviour Tsar @BennettTraining discovered that keeping unruly kids under control was harder than it looked, so he developed solutions based on teaching compassion, patience, and self-regulation.  He joined us to show us how it's done.

The power of systematic, synthetic phonics instruction right here 👇 Let's make it happen for all children in every school in Australia 💪🧠💛
My daughter is 6 lessons away from finishing this book. She can read like a 1st grader and she's 4. A new student just entered my middle school who is unable to decode. I will end the year by teaching him with this book.

Highly recommend 👌 Completing a Graduate Certificate in Education with what I'm passionate about made the biggest difference to my teaching career. Passionate teachers need to stay passionate or we burn out. 8 yrs ago now when I retrained in Learning Difficulties & SoR/SoL 👏💪
