Science moves faster when knowledge is shared openly. From the time I entered graduate school, I became fascinated by what open sharing of data could do in fields as disparate as physics, art, and coding. Total strangers helping each other go further. Sharing knowledge openly is part of the ethos of the @AllenInstitute. Every year, millions of people use our open data and tools to power their research, to learn, and even to make art. We take on foundational projects that are needed and are too big for any single lab to tackle, and build them from day one to be shared. We need to share and work together to accelerate science for a healthier world. This #OpenScienceWeek, join me in celebrating the scientists and organizations everywhere who share their data, tools, and knowledge to accelerate discovery.

Evolution has produced extraordinary diversity, but what exists in nature is only a fraction of what's possible. Today we're announcing AI BioDesign, a new research accelerator with the @UWmedicine and @FredHutch, supported by Fund for Science and Technology, that combines experimental biology and artificial intelligence to learn nature’s design rules and create the tools we need. What excites me about AI BioDesign is that it brings together the right people and the right institutions at the right time to advance biological design with AI in the loop. The @AllenInstitute was built for this kind of work. AI BioDesign will use AI models to guide the data we generate, and then generate these data at scale to feed back into the models, in flywheel cycles that continuously improve data and models, to design new biological tools with greater precision. Congrats to David Baker, @JShendure, @SRsrivatsan, and the entire AI BioDesign team!

Results from an OpenScope study led by @OttTorben and @RobertoDeF_ just came out! We found some illuminating cell-types specific effects of psilocybin at the @AllenInstitute !
1/ Thrilled to share the first work from the Ott lab (@OttTorben), with OpenScope at @AllenInstitute! We focused on how #psilocybin 🍄changes visual processing during active behavior in mice. We combined visual change detection with large-scale Neuropixels recordings in mice.

It was a privilege to share the stage today with @BenedictEvans and @chattwithjulia at @ChristiesInc Art + Tech Summit. Thank you to Devang Thakkar and Christie’s for the invitation. We discussed how AI is empowering more people to participate in science and solve some of the most complex problems of our time. I also got to share a bit about how AI is allowing us to bring science and art together to inform and inspire. It’s why we’ve partnered with @refikanadol as our artist in residence at @AllenInstitute. We have exciting plans for the future. Stay tuned!

Check out this incredible resource created through a large‑scale, team science effort! ~90 scientists worked together to map Alzheimer’s disease across the human brain at single‑cell resolution. 🗺️🧠 @KyleTravaglini, @MGabitto, @anamikaagr, and collaborators mapped ~7 million nuclei across ten human brain regions using single‑nucleus RNA‑seq, ATAC‑seq, matched neuropathology, and whole‑genome sequencing from 84 donors. The result is one of the most detailed maps yet of how Alzheimer’s affects different brain cell types across multiple brain regions. Rather than harming all neurons equally, Alzheimer’s appears to target specific cell populations in a predictable sequence. These patterns were replicated across three independent cohorts comprising more than 700 additional donors. 👥 Understanding which cells are vulnerable—and why—could help researchers develop treatments that intervene earlier and protect the cells most at risk. 🌐 This work expands the Seattle Alzheimer’s Disease Brain Cell Atlas (SEA‑AD). “These data, available at SEA-AD.org, provide a multiregional framework for the community to explore the molecular and cellular changes of AD progression.” Congratulations to all the authors! 🏛️ @AllenInstitute, @uwlabmedpath, @BRaINLabsm, @KPWaResearch, @UWNeurology, @deepsciventures, @UWRadiology, @UWDeptMedicine 💸 @NIHAging, @NIH_Innovates 🔎 @biorxivpreprint below!
