Following the Trump–Xi summit in Washington, we joined the @PennUSChina for a timely discussion on the challenges shaping U.S.–China relations.
We brought together perspectives on national security, trade, energy, human rights, and educational exchange. Beyond the diplomatic headlines, we remain particularly attentive to what the summit means for human rights, civil society, and the future of people-to-people exchange between the two countries.
Our thanks to Cory Combs, Aaron Glasserman, Bochen Han, and Yaqiu Wang @coryjcombs @AaronGlasserman @bochenhan @Yaqiu for sharing their insights, and to Neysun Mahboubi @NeysunM for moderating such a thoughtful discussion.

As negotiations stall, the Trump administration is expected to intensify economic pressure on Iran this week in an effort to force concessions.
But with China as Iran’s biggest oil buyer, will the U.S. ask Beijing to join its economic pressure campaign?

The United States has imposed economic sanction on Iran for decades. There is not much left that can be done except for pressuring China, which is by far Iran's most important economic partner. China is not going to concede to American pressure. @AaronGlasserman agsi.org/events/the-challeng…

This September marks JF Books’ second anniversary in Washington, DC! To celebrate, we are proud to present the 2026 Sinophone Independent Film Festival: Between Islands, Voices Emerge (Sept 19–26). The festival features ten remarkable documentaries and narrative films spanning Taiwan, Hong Kong, mainland China, Costa Rica, and the global diaspora.
Alongside the festival, our September event series explores the deep layers of Chinese history, geopolitical influence, and cultural identity. Join publisher Bao Pu as he re-examines the lasting impact of the Cultural Revolution, veteran journalist Orville Schell as he exposes China’s secret prison labor system, and Dr. Audrye Wong as she demystifies Beijing’s economic statecraft. We also delve into diaspora, food, and belonging with authors Kit Fan and Jeremy Tiang, and wrap up with an analysis of the Trump-Xi summit featuring fellows from the Penn Project.
Even in this unstable world, we look forward to connecting with you through films and conversations.
