Dear #Interns of 2024-
Welcome to the noblest of professions.
You are one of us now.
It’s great pressure and stress- the world we’re responsible for in the healing arts.
It’s simultaneously a great honor.
My advice?
1. Listen closely to our patients. Hear them- they’ll tell you what you need to know.
2. Ask for help. NEVER worry alone.
3. Above all, remember your “why” for choosing this difficult route- it is worth it no matter the cynicism that you may find yourself surrounded by in the years ahead.
All of your attendings vividly remember our first day, too.

I worked last night, on the eve of July 1.
Our new interns were in the ED, orienting, and I kind of forget how their presence brings such an air of excitement every year.
It reminds me of all the “firsts” that have that special spark (but quickly become dulled by routine in life):
first date with the person that becomes your spouse,
first day of a new school with classrooms full of new potential friends,
firsts of baby as you experience the moment a new connection makes in their little minds…
First day, month, year of residency very much have that feeling.
Enjoy every minute of it—for both the new interns and the senior residents/faculty/staff/patients/etc. that get to be a part of it.
