Quality is often evaluated by looking at what happened during a patient encounter.
But the conditions that influence that encounter began long before the call.
Training. Protocols. Equipment. Staffing. Communication. Documentation systems. Organizational culture.
An agency-wide number can be useful.
It can also hide important variation.
Looking at quality data over time, across different parts of a system, and alongside other relevant information can help organizations better understand what is happening beneath the headline number.
"What happened?" and "Who did it?" can lead to very different conversations.
Strong quality leadership creates space to ask deeper questions.
Why are we seeing this pattern?
What factors may be contributing?
What can we learn?
Looking at lights and sirens use can help EMS systems better understand response practices, identify variation, and evaluate patterns across their organization.

A dashboard can tell you what is happening. Quality leadership asks what comes next.
Why are we seeing this pattern?
Is it consistent across crews, shifts, or patient populations?
Has it changed over time?
What else do we need to understand?
Not everything that can be counted needs to become a quality measure.
Useful measures should help us better understand care, processes, and opportunities for improvement.
That is why measure development matters.
Collecting data is only the beginning.
The real value of quality measurement comes from what happens next: identifying patterns, asking better questions, and using what we learn to guide improvement.

Sometimes the outcome is good because the system worked or someone caught a problem just in time
or it's simply luck.
Quality improvement looks beyond the outcome to understand the process.
Costco built trust through consistency. Quality improvement does the same. Reliable systems create reliable results.
Quality isn't only about learning from mistakes. It's also about recognizing the people who prevent them in the first place.
The best professionals in the world still use checklists. Not because they lack experience, but because consistency matters. That's quality improvement in action.
NEMSQA committees are where ideas become action. Whether you're interested in quality measures, research, communications, or membership, there's a place to get involved. Join us: nemsqa.memberclicks.net/comm…
The NEMSQA Pediatrics-03b measure focuses on documenting pediatric weight in kilograms (or a length based weight estimate) for patients receiving medications, helping agencies evaluate a critical safety process for high risk pediatric encounters.

Not every syncopal event has the same underlying cause.
The NEMSQA Syncope-01 measure tracks how often a 12 lead ECG is performed during eligible EMS responses for patients with syncope.

Assessment comes first. Improvement follows.
Trauma-01 measures pain assessment. Trauma-03 measures whether pain scores improve during the EMS encounter. Together, they tell a more complete story.

Quality isn't measured one call at a time.
Trauma-04 helps agencies evaluate trauma center transport patterns across their entire system.
