Your team cannot create valuable automated tests/checks without exploratory testing. You need to explore a system, to understand it enough to create valuable automation. Automation that is truly going to help the team make decisions. And not just generate noise/distraction.

This is Jordan Neely. On Monday, he was lynched. On the NYC subway he started telling passengers that he was fed up being hungry, thirsty and having no place to rest. He began to shout in his frustration, and threw his jacket on the floor. An ex-marine then murdered him.🧵

This story has been a while coming and I'm pretty excited to see it in print. Late last year, the editor of The Listener asked me if I could write a feature about adult ADHD diagnoses. I jumped at it, not least because it's something I've thought about for a *long* time.

Asked for examples of sexual harassment at law schools, ChatGPT named a GW prof accused of touching a student on a class trip to Alaska, citing a WashPost story. The prof is real. The rest was made up. We wrote about what happens when AIs lie about you: washingtonpost.com/technolog…

How would you write "I did grocery shopping" on a resume? “Managed the timely and cost-effective purchase of core operational supplies of a dynamic and agile team and ensured that all stakeholders had the required nutritional inputs to operate functionally.”

Got very ratty at the radio hosts whining about "hysteria" and school closures as people were relying on them for information about a deadly cyclone. Decided to juxtapose their insipid commentary with the responsible reporting happening at the same time rnz.co.nz/national/programme…

There's a difference between being responsible for quality and being responsible for testing.

Do companies test their hold music? From mobile phones? If so, do they intentionally select music outside the voice range digitized by mobile devices? Or do they intentionally select music that triggers mobile phone noise cancellation. It's 2023. Mobile is not a new thing.

“Boundary value analysis” is rarely practiced in any kind of way that warrants calling it “analysis”. It’s usually done (and, sadly, taught) via a formula: “add and/or subtract one from some number you’ve been explicitly told about”. Better testers *reveal* *hidden* boundaries.

Something's badly wrong with the world if Nick is still out of pocket after writing this detailed & gripping history of the Post Office / Horizon scandal. It's a fantastic book and anyone with the slightest interest in law, justice, computing, courage or cowardice should buy it.

I still haven't broken even on this book, so forgive me for continuing to plug it. Available from all good book stores, but Amazon can put it in your hands tomorrow.

Working as designed? 71 seconds that should horrify testers and IT auditors. This is Patrick Green, who represented subpostmasters in the Horizon trial, talking about a system feature that led users to make costly mistakes for which they were held liable. 1/3 #PostOfficeScandal

Good UX though!
Needless to say, I don't think it's good news.
