Africa bears some of the highest costs of a climate crisis it did not create.
This year, the Africa Youth Climate Finance Fellowship (AYCFF), a flagship advocacy programme by Jacobโs Ladder Africa, responded by equipping young Africans to lead in an area that cuts across every green sector, climate finance.
Over the course of nine months, 30 fellows from 18 different African countries participated in world-class training, developed grounded policy briefs, and engaged various stakeholders globally, amplifying youth perspectives across Africaโs climate finance discourse. AYCFF strengthened not only individual capacity but also a continent-wide community of practice prepared to influence systems, decisions, and investment flows.
๐ค As we build on this momentum, we are seeking strategic partners and funders to scale the Fellowshipโs impact in future cohorts.

If climate action is to create real opportunities, it must start by valuing our human capital, youth as frontline implementers, and locally driven solutions that already work.
Climate action must:

2. Fund whatโs working locally
3. Build systems that trust us to lead

By 2030, Africa is expected to create over 3 million green jobs in sectors such as renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and e-mobility.
But without the right policies, those jobs will go elsewhere.
Industrial and trade rules, like requiring imported e-bikes to arrive disassembled so local workers can assemble them, can spark entire industries.

In his article, Ahmed Osman โ AYCFF Fellow 2025 and Youth & Climate Change Focal Point at Somaliaโs Ministry of Environment and Climate Change โ spotlights the upcoming Africa Climate Summit (ACS-2), set for 8โ10 September 2025 in Addis Ababa.
He emphasizes Africaโs potential to lead global climate action, the urgency of mobilizing finance for green and resilient growth, and the critical role of youth, who make up over 60% of the continentโs population, in shaping solutions. Ahmed underscores that climate action is not just an environmental necessity, but also a pathway to economic transformation through green jobs that can tackle Africaโs youth unemployment crisis.

In Part II of our #AYCFF explainer series on climate finance instruments, we spotlight some innovative mechanisms that are helping scale up funding for climate adaptation and mitigation, especially in the Global South.
6. Results-Based Finance (RBF): Funds are only disbursed when measurable climate outcomes are achieved.
Example: Norway's REDD+ payments for reduced deforestation in Brazil.
7. Carbon Pricing Instruments: Tools like carbon taxes or emissions trading that put a price on pollution.
Example: EU Emissions Trading System.
8. Blended Finance: Use of public or concessional capital to attract private investment.
Example: Global Energy Alliance mobilizing clean energy access in Africa.
9. Climate Insurance Instruments
a) Sovereign Risk Insurance โ Rapid disaster response for governments.
Example: CCRIF for Caribbean nations.
b) Index-Based Insurance โ Payouts triggered by climate data (e.g., rainfall).
Example: GIIF support for Kenyan farmers.
c) Parametric Insurance โ Fast payouts after predefined extreme events.
Example: PCRAFI for Pacific islands.
d) Microinsurance โ Low-cost protection for vulnerable households.
Example: ACRE Africaโs mobile crop insurance.
The big takeaway? Climate finance isnโt one-size-fits-all. The right mix of instruments helps unlock real, just, and scalable climate solutions.

Unlocking Climate Finance Instruments
Ever wondered how climate finance actually works? Or what tools are used to channel climate funding from global commitments to real impact on the ground?
Our #AYCFF fellows have been diving deep into the world of climate finance instruments, which are the financial tools used to support climate action across the globe.
Here are some of the most important ones you should know:
1. Grants: Non-repayable funds for early-stage projects, adaptation, and capacity building.
Example: Green Climate Fund grants for climate-resilient agriculture in Ghana.
2. Concessional Loans: Low-interest loans with favorable terms for large-scale green infrastructure.
Example: ADB loans for solar energy in India & Southeast Asia.
3. Equity Investments: Capital for ownership in clean-tech startups or green businesses.
Example: IFC equity in renewable energy companies across Africa.
4. Guarantees & Risk-Sharing Tools: Reduce risks (like political or credit risk) to encourage private investment.
Example: MIGA insurance for solar farms in fragile states.
5. Green Bonds: Bonds used exclusively to fund climate or environmental projects.
Example: Franceโs green bonds for energy-efficient buildings & transport.
Stay tuned for Part II โ weโre just getting started!

As the world gears up for the Africa Climate Summit 2, the conversation is clear: Africa must lead with its own solutions, and we must finance them fairly, inclusively, and at scale.
We believe that before we can demand better financing for our future, we need to go back to the basics and build a solid understanding of what climate finance really is, and so this week we will be gleaning from key sessions from the Regional Climate Finance Trade Commissioner (Africa), Global Affairs Canada, Mr. @EulogeCamara.
So, what is climate finance?
Climate finance refers to the public, private, or blended funding that supports efforts to address climate change. It enables countries and communities to both:
1. Mitigate (cut emissions, shift to clean energy)
2. Adapt (prepare for climate impacts like droughts, floods, or crop failure)
This funding is rooted in international law and global justice, and backed by ky global legal frameworks, and is therefore not optional.
The UNFCCC (1992) first established that developed countries must financially support developing nations in tackling climate change.
The Kyoto Protocol (1997) introduced carbon markets like the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM).
The Paris Agreement (2015) reaffirmed the commitment, with developed countries pledging to mobilize $100 billion annually for developing countries.
The Green Climate Fund (GCF) is the largest dedicated climate fund that was set up to support low-emission, climate-resilient development, especially in vulnerable regions.
Together, these legal pillars make climate finance a right, not a favor, especially for countries like those in Africa that contribute the least to climate change but suffer the most from its effects.
Climate finance is designed to:
1. Cut emissions
2. Strengthen resilience
3. Promote sustainable development
4. Advance climate justice
As the Africa Climate Summit 2 calls the world to action, AYCFF invites you to walk with us from the foundations to the frontlines as we spotlight what it really takes to fund Africaโs climate future.

Africa wonโt achieve climate justice on billion-dollar pledges alone; youth must be at the center of delivery.
At the Africa Climate Summit (ACS), leaders committed $1 billion annually to support climate action in developing countries.
But as Ahmed Osman @A_Farole, an Africa Youth Climate Finance Fellow (AYCFF 2025), emphasizes: without meaningful youth inclusion, these promises risk falling flat.
Watch the full video to hear Ahmedโs call for youth-led climate solutions, and why financing their leadership is key to turning ACS pledges into real impact.

What good is a $600 million renewable energy pledge if only $23 million has reached the ground?
At the Africa Climate Summit (ACS), bold declarations like the Nairobi Declaration promised simplified access to climate funds and big investments in Africaโs clean energy future.
But as Alexandre Zoumman, an Africa Youth Climate Finance Fellow (AYCFF 2025), points out, commitments without clarity and action breed distrust.
With billions promised and only a fraction utilized, transparency and delivery are no longer optional; they're urgent.
Watch the full video to hear Alexandreโs take on why the true power of the Nairobi Declaration lies in follow-through, transparency, and youth-driven accountability.

What if Africaโs true wealth isnโt just measured in currency, but in forests, wetlands, and biodiversity?
At the Africa Climate Summit (ACS), leaders called for a radical rethink of how we define economic value, and Monica Mhina, an Africa Youth Climate Finance Fellow (AYCFF 2025), echoes that urgency.
In a continent rich in ecosystems but undercounted in global economic systems, Monica makes the case for re-evaluating Africaโs GDP to reflect its natural capital and ecological wealth, ensuring that climate finance and policy are rooted in Africaโs true value.
Watch the full video to hear Monicaโs vision for a new economic lens that sees wetlands, forests, and ecosystems not as invisible assets, but as the foundation of Africaโs climate and economic resilience.
๐ฌ Should Africa push for natural capital to be central in GDP calculations? What would that change for climate action and investment? Share your view.

Can Africa survive the climate crisis on declarations alone?
From drought-scarred farms to rising floodlines, communities are bearing the impact of climate change with little more than promises to hold on to.
Policy without action is a luxury frontline communities canโt afford.
