this is just factually untrue and a spit in the face of all the people who know folks who never recovered from COVID
“long haul covid symptoms” always meant like 1-2 years after initially contracting it and basically only happened to people who nearly died. as cool as it would be to get checks because i got sick 6 years ago, its probably not good to think of yourself as Disabled For Life

i would like to live in a society where it would be unthinkable - utterly inconceivable - for people to go to work/ school while sick

Going from a socialist to a Republican in a handful of years because of Israel is crazy, do you realize how Islamophobic you have to be to do that lol
I admire Democrats making this choice. I’m supporting Rogers because he is not an extremist. As a father, public safety matters to me. I don’t trust Abdul El-Sayed, but I trust Mike Rogers on the issues that matter most. Mike Rogers has shown he’s willing and ready to work with local Democrats on achievable bread-and-butter issues to improve life for Michiganders. I respect that.

At a certain point we have to just be honest and say that if you are a single-issue pro-genocide voter (to the extent you will even sacrifice American democracy itself towards that end!), you do belong in the GOP. This is just rational sorting, and unavoidable ultimately.
New York Times national reporter: Lifelong Jewish Democrats in Detroit suburbs say they’re voting Republican for the first time. "That’s a big deal. I don’t know of any other marquee race in the country right now where the Republican candidate is converting Democrats."

There’s much about this that’s false but on the issue of “terrorism” it’s worth highlighting again that in the past 30 years Israel had killed more American civilians than Hezbollah and Iran combined and it’s not particularly close.
To answer this directly, Israeli intelligence helps secure the world's oil supplies/transit, as well as providing needed surveillance regarding international terrorist groups who threaten Americans. There's a lot of wishful thinking that Israel doesn't help us much, but they do.

Sally Rooney is an experimental novelist, you guys are just misogynists
It’s important that while we commend Rooney’s principled stand and defend her from the illiberal consequences of draconian proscription laws we never waver on the entirely separate fact that her books are extremely shallow and bland.

If you aren’t capable of telling the difference, you have no right talking about how they’re the same. I can’t express how little I esteem someone’s taste if they can confuse the two writing skills here. Rooney is one of the most subtle, affect-sensitive writers in the language.
These two passages depict the same subject matter in an identical style. One is from Fifty Shades of Grey. The other is from Sally Rooney’s Normal People. I bet you can't even tell which is which. If we have the sensibility to dismiss one as a trashy romance novel, then why do we continue to celebrate the other as serious literature?

(The Rooney passage, for one, is almost inarticulably sad: the charged missed connection of lovers who are seeking contradictory forms of self-creation via sex. The other has almost nothing besides plot going on. A “critic” thinking they’re the same is so embarrassing it hurts.)

I don't even think taste matters much! My training taught me it's mostly arbitrary/contextual. Someone who can't distinguish between these passages might be able to distinguish between passages that look dead the same to me! But making some big argument from ignorance is silly.

It is even worse than this. Biden dropped the Covid plan he ran on, put a hedge fund manager in charge, and ignored medical recommendations. This led to hundreds of thousands of unnecessary deaths, turning Omicron into a mass disabling event, and making Covid the number one chronic disease in children.
This was Joe Biden's favorite pundit for all things COVID-19. Instead of listening to concerned doctors and scientists, he hung off every word of an unqualified economics reporter, David Leonhardt. Long COVID is now the leading chronic illness in children. That is Biden's legacy.

The truth remains that most academics, includ some disabled faculty, hate disabled ppl, seeing them as part of unwashed masses who should be excluded from higher education and who, by being “allowed” into higher ed, make everyone else’s experiences and working conditions worse.
I think about this a lot having been diagnosed with a lifelong chronic illness in the middle of my dissertation. Had a shit ton of privilege build up before that moment. Still barely finished that diss. Still barely surviving academic ableism in my “career.”

I really do think large portions of the world only ever learned to motivate themselves using shame and fear and are terrified that self-love might actually be a better tool they don't know how to access so when they try they fall into disarray and return to shame as motivation.
why is it never “if you have adhd, you have to love yourself enough to care for your needs because you deserve health and meaning” with you people. i know you hate yourself but how is that my problem!!!

I cannot imagine the horror of going to your execution, experiencing severe pain, and then waking up and finding out you lived and that you have to go to your execution again. Hard to imagine what it means for something to be cruel and unusual if that isn’t it.

Naive hope or toxic positivity is how secular people do spiritual bypassing
Happy Sunday! Just a friendly reminder that there is no such thing as "false hope". "We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope." - Martin Luther King Jr Have a great day!

wow an american who thinks that treaty obligations should be violated who could have possibly predicted this
my most chud opinion is that i find all the aboriginal rights stuff canada is doing to be kinda absurd. you shouldn’t be creating separate legal jurisdictions within your own borders that can veto infrastructure projects. “collective rights” is a horribly illiberal concept

Nearly every discourse we have online falls apart if you stop believing in a unified individual self. Inside every person, there are parts that have done good things and parts that have done bad things, all in blocs—but there is no unified "person" there to subsume moral agency.

Does a system accrue moral responsibility? Yeah, probably: since for harm to be done outside, usually internal parts must also fail to intervene. But without the soul as a moral bank account, processing debits and credits, that responsibility gets complex fast.

Sometimes people think that applying partswork to moral analysis erases responsibility or lets victimizers off easy. Personally, what I see is the tragic element: there is nothing anyone can do to undo what has been done, and often we watch ourselves do things we regret.
