the amount you want something can't be perfectly discerned by the amount of effort you are able to put in . there is almost nothing I love more than dancing and poetry and I will never forgot my mom going "if it is this hard for you to do it you must not really want to"
Earnestly feel like a lot of life has been me trying to hide some delicate little secret sphere from the world that desperately wants me to stomp on it to prove something to them and the effort alone has put tons of cracks in it...
people see no risk in telling depressed people they need to make some kind of clear decision on whether they are going to fix their depression or just die is wild to me because black and white thinking is already a problem....like....
the way these ex-depressed folk talk about depressed people lacks basic empathy and makes me wonder how many of y'all just hate the past you who was (more) depressed.
the idea that people in worse conditions than you are all simply not trying is a very convenient thing to believe. maybe too convenient, even.
people begin by heavily implying that mental disorders are a product of weakness and laziness and that you merely have to decide to reject victimhood to be better and when they get called out they pretend they just meant the sun helps with depression

i dont like the conversation around that one tweet abt depression recovery advice. "you have to choose to get better" implies people are choosing not to. for some of us its not even a choice we get.
wish the people posting about depression would consider that people with depression aren't idiots and post accordingly...
super happy for the people for whom imagining a better life and attempting to actualize that was entirely enough to fix their depression but if that was my main coping strategy I would actually end it

people want to view depression & mental ill-health as an individual problem with solely individual solutions partly because it provides hope that they can bootstrap their way out and partly to absolve themselves of the responsibilities viewing it as a societal ill imply
"you have to decide you want to get better" is trivial and patronizing and mostly functions as a way to ignore the real barriers that people face. it is one teeny point above calling people lazy because at least it is true but they both function as empty words we can gesture to
if every solution you construct for everyone's problems always requires them to put in mountain's of non-specific psychic work to deserve well-being maybe your model for human well-being is broken.
surprises me none that a nation of people who believe a perfect God punishes people for being honestly mistaken about his existence would also believe that people who mistakenly think their mental health problems can’t be alleviated or treated should simply be abandoned.
the truth is that the "some people don't want help" and "people hurt themselves for attention" crowd is just searching for a shield for their apathy because any reasonable person would ask follow up questions to their statements the first time they thought them.
