IIT Roorkee Study Reveals Growing Convergence of Flood and Drought Vulnerabilities Across India A study led by researchers at IIT Roorkee reveals an increasing overlap in district-level vulnerability to floods and droughts, highlighting the need for integrated climate-risk planning and multi-hazard preparedness. Published in npj Natural Hazards, the study analysed 591 districts across India and found that, by 2011, more than one-fifth of districts were highly vulnerable to floods, nearly one-fifth to droughts, and more than one in ten fell towards the higher end of the Multi-Hazard Vulnerability Index (MHVI). Led by Prof. Mohit Prakash Mohanty, with researchers Priyanka Tripathy, Dev Anand Thakur and Vittal Hari, the study identifies growing multi-hazard hotspots, particularly across eastern and northern India. The findings underscore the importance of district-level assessments in strengthening climate adaptation, disaster risk reduction and resilient development. Supported by the Department of Science & Technology (DST) through ICARS at IIT Roorkee, the research advances evidence-based approaches to identifying vulnerable regions and prioritising climate resilience measures. #IITRoorkee #ClimateResilience #FloodRisk #DroughtRisk #DisasterRiskReduction #ClimateAdaptation #MultiHazardRisk #ResearchAndInnovation #SustainableDevelopment
