Why don’t people rely more on buses and the metro?
India has just 10 buses for every 1 lakh people. Limited bus services, long waiting times, poor last-mile connectivity and unsafe footpaths can make public transport difficult to access and use.
In this article published in @NavbharatTimes (NBT), @shubham_srvstv of @CSEINDIA examines why public transport often fails to become the preferred choice for daily commuters.
Along with increasing the availability of buses, cities need to improve service frequency, strengthen connections to metro stations, create safer walking infrastructure and manage private vehicle use.

The recent tragedy in Nepal, where floods and landslides have claimed lives and left thousands missing, is not just a story of extreme weather or climate change.
It is also about the way we continue to treat the Himalayas, believing that we can re-engineer fragile ecosystems without consequences.
In her latest episode of the Sunita Narain Show, she asks us to confront this mindset and rethink the way we develop the Himalayas.

The Himalayas are sending us a message, loud and clear. But are we listening?
As floods and landslides devastate the region, Sunita Narain @sunitanar warns that climate change and reckless development are turning fragile mountains into disaster zones.
“We really believe that we can continue to do what we do, without consequences.”
Change your mindset. Change or perish.

Are India’s new fuel-efficiency rules slowing the shift to electric vehicles?
The CAFE III norms could allow automakers to meet emissions targets on paper without substantial investment in EVs. Anumita Roychowdhury (@AnumitaRoychowd) examines how regulatory discounts and compliance credits risk protecting conventional vehicles at the expense of cleaner technologies.

CSE has kicked off “Leveraging Agroecology for Livelihoods”, bringing together 20 FPOs, practitioners, researchers and development organisations from across India.
Day 1 explored agrobiodiversity, FPOs, women’s leadership, soil health, community seed banks and traditional seed conservation.
The day also saw the launch of “The Agrobiodiversity Economy”, CSE’s new report featuring 10 real-world case studies on how local and underutilised foods can create livelihood opportunities while supporting biodiversity.

On August 26, an ice-and-rock avalanche struck Nepal, wiping out settlements across hundreds of kilometres and pushing the death toll past 1,300 people. Could better monitoring and early-warning systems have given people crucial time to evacuate? The disaster underscores the need for better sensors, cameras, weather monitoring and data sharing, not just in the Himalayas, but across all landscapes vulnerable to extreme weather events.
Down To Earth explored these gaps in 2023, and narrowing them now seems more urgent than ever.

How should developing countries build their clean-tech industries? There is no single path to green industrialisation.
Countries can seek to integrate into existing global value chains, building manufacturing capacity by plugging into established markets and supply chains.
Or they can pursue greater technological and industrial autonomy, investing in domestic capabilities, research and development, and indigenous supply chains. Both approaches come with opportunities and risks. And for many countries, the answer may lie somewhere in between.
In the latest episode of Carbon Politics, @aygoswami and @TrishantDev explore these different pathways and what they could mean for developing countries seeking to capture greater value from the green transition.

#Opinion | Plastic regime needs transparency
#India’s EPR regime reports 17 mn tonnes of plastic packaging waste recycled since 2022. Yet plastic waste remains visible across cities, villages and waterways.
@sunitanar points to questions around self-reported waste data, verification of recycling volumes, certificate generation and the lack of public access to the EPR portal.

WATCH | In the latest episode of The Sunita Narain Show, @sunitanar takes us back 2 decades.
📌In April 2005, Narain had been asked by the government of former prime minister, Manmohan Singh, to chair the Tiger Task Force and draw up an agenda for the conservation of the flagship species of India’s wilds, the Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris).
📌This came on the heels of an investigation by intrepid journalist @mazoomdaar, who had broken the story that the last tiger had disappeared from Sariska National Park in Alwar, Rajasthan.
📌In August 2005, the panel handed over the Tiger Task Force report to Dr Singh.
📌In the decades since, tiger numbers have rebounded in India. The All India Tiger Estimation (2022) places India’s tiger population at 3,682. Of the 13 tiger range countries across Asia from Russia to Indonesia, India accounts for nearly 70% of all wild tigers globally.
📌 But, says Narain, this increase has largely been within the “enclaves” of tiger reserves. The real work now is to build a conservation programme that secures tigers and people. We need a strong co-existence agenda that safeguards rising tiger numbers while securing the livelihoods of local people. The agenda for conservation is about wild animals and people.

📌The Nepal disaster is a result of decades of an engineering mindset that assumed rivers and mountains could be re-engineered at will, @sunitanar, Director General, @CSEINDIA, said on September 2, 2026.
📌She was speaking at the 8th International Conference on Sustainability Education (ICSE) 2026, which opened at the India Habitat Centre in the national capital. The event brought together policymakers, educators, scientists, industry leaders and young people under the theme “Sustainability Education for Transformative Action.”

If the Extended Producer Responsibility is working so well, why do we see so much plastic waste everywhere? @sunitanar asks in her latest editorial.
India’s EPR regime reports that 17 million tonnes of plastic packaging waste have been recycled since 2022. Yet plastic waste continues to pile up in our cities, villages and waterways.
So what is going wrong?
The answer may lie in how the system is being monitored and verified. EPR needs greater scrutiny, stronger compliance and, above all, transparency.
As of June 28, 2026, the EPR portal is accessible only to a closed group of users. Whatever the reasons for restricting access, less transparency makes it harder to scrutinise the system and hold it accountable.
This is not governance for tomorrow. It is not even governance of yesterday.
