Network notice · Knots 29.4.2 soft fork From block 973440 (~22 Sep) to 979920 (~5 Nov) every newly mined coinbase must wait 45 days before it can be spent, instead of 100 blocks. It is temporary, and it exists to make hit-and-run mining unprofitable and give miners who stay an edge. Payouts, shares and the split do not change; coins from those blocks just unlock at block 979920 (make-goods too). Lazarus supports it and our nodes switch at block 973400. DATUM gateway operators run their own node, so the choice is yours: to support it, run Knots 29.4.2 before block 973440. github.com/bitcoinknots/bitc…

The reason XBT should lengthen the coinbase maturity is not because of a reaction to Alpha Pool. It’s to better align the time preferences of those making decisions on consensus rule changes. This requires some background. For five years now we’ve wondered if mining is even profitable - Fees have disappeared - Anyone who’s bought mining equipment wishes they bought coins instead - 99% of coins have been mined - The bitaxe community sees profit as missing the point - We wonder if the only “profitable” corporate miners are those propped up by fiat funding - MARA bailed even with fiat funding. Things were different a decade ago. Clearly mining profitably part of Satoshi’s incentive model. What’s changed? Fees have disappeared due to a growth of trust in second layers and institutional paper. Sure Liquid failed but that’s small in comparison to the trend. Demand for on-chain monetary txs has dropped which has incentives arbitrary data storage. All this on top of the fact that the mining reward is a small fraction of what it used to be. Did speculation build up mining infrastructure far larger than it reasonably should have? Yes it probably overshot, but that doesn’t affect the underlying dynamic. The main issue is that miners (in aggregate) now have a shorter timescale view of what success means, compared to the hodler-node runner community (in aggregate) Sure industrial miners have large up front costs they don’t want to waste. But the monthly cash flow compared to electricity costs is their main game. Also mining hardware is dead after 5 years. The hodler/node runners are in this for life. This is world changing, forever money to them. It’s personal. It’s the only thing they trust for their retirement. These two communities are strange bed fellows to come together consensus rule changes. The reason XBT should lengthen the coinbase maturity is not because of a reaction to Alpha Pool. It’s something much deeper. Requiring a longer time before a coinbase reward becomes spendable explicitly makes the miner or pool operator think about a time in the future. Imagine coinbase maturity is lengthened to one year. The miner or pool operator is at least incentivized to care if the coin is operational a year from now. Sure that might make them struggle to meet monthly electricity bills. But only if they aren’t playing the reserve game. Feature not a bug. Perhaps that will decrease demand for mining, but I don’t think that is as important as aligning the time preferences of those trying to agree on consensus rules. TLDR - Increasing the coinbase maturity is software change that attempts to more align the time preference of miners (in aggregate) with the time preference of node-running holders (in aggregate) so that when it comes to consensus rule changes, the community is comparatively more on the same page.

XBT is 2016 all over again, going from $400 to $20,000. Bitspammers are gonna be so mad they’ll be foaming at the mouth.

What matters is the truth and doing the right thing. Our goal is not to predict the future, but to do what we ought to do in the present.

If you missed being "early" to Bitcoin-sha256 now is your chance to avoid lifelong regrets and join in its reboot as Bitcoin-blake2b XBT. Don't be a two-time loser!

Your "miners" are RUGGING US. Block rewards are meant to pay people who help decentralize the network. You are doing the OPPOSITE.

It's *not* an inside job. Andy wasn't running a Ponzi Scheme and Blockstream absolutely did *not* pull off a fake hack, stealing their own money and giving it back to themselves minus the money they needed (~$50m or so) to keep the game of musical chairs going. It's totally a thing for a "white hat" to take a $50m cut for themselves.

August 8th, Spamcoin forked off from Bitcoin with a contentious hardfork attempt (removing/violating BIP110 rules). Bitcoin continued, albeit maimed by miner abandonment. August 19th, "Purity" did the same (by removing/replacing the DAA). Bitcoin continued, unfazed. August 30th, Bitcoin deployed a proof-of-work change to BLAKE2b. It was uncontroversial and unanimously supported by what was left of the network, and carries the original chain forward undisputed.

Fantastic news for those who want to be able to build their own USDT block templates when they're mining fiat
OCEAN's Board of Directors has elected Rapha Zagury (@RaphaZagury ) as a Director. Rapha is the CEO of Twenty One Capital (NYSE: XXI) and founder of Elektron Energy, one of the world's largest private Bitcoin miners. Before Bitcoin, he spent years in investment banking and capital markets at Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch, and Deutsche Bank. Rapha has been in OCEAN's corner since the early days, long before joining the board. He believed in what we were building when decentralized mining was a much harder sell, and supported us with hashrate from the start. As a miner, Rapha deals with the same things our customers do every day: power costs, uptime, payouts, and pool economics. That keeps OCEAN grounded in what miners actually need. Welcome to the Board, Rapha. 🌊

Also - I propose renaming the tiniest unit of SHA256coin to "suits" instead of "sats"

Nobody with a SHA-256 business is going to shit on SHA-256. The incentives don’t work that way. Unless you're Luke or Kratter and others, who have high integrity.
OF COURSE @boomer_btc TURNED THE COMMENTS OFF! No criticism aloud on suitcoin!

This isn’t BCH, BSV... Blake2b is the first hard fork in Bitcoin history that tightens the rules instead of loosening them. It fires the centralized miners, kills the CSAM loophole, and restores Bitcoin as money-only. Pure rejection of abuse. Blake2b is the real Bitcoin.

We didn't just fire the miners, we fired Core, and just look at the fixes! -taproot bug fix -contiguous data capped at 256 bytes -extra nonce space -block withholding fix -poison block fix -light client fix -block size reduced -Unix 32-bit time fix -multi vendor asics

Spamcoin isn't Bitcoin and operates under centralized management, just like the US dollar, but worse. Spamcoin does not allow miners to build their own template. DATUM has no purpose on Spamcoin. Claiming it decentralizes anything is false advertising.

BLAKE2b is quite a bit better for decentralization than SHA256d... For starters, we now have the precedent that centralization will result in a PoW change, creating a strong disincentive to do so. BLAKE2b also doesn't have any known vulnerabilities (like SHA256d's ASICBoost) and is very simple for new ASIC manufacturers to enter the market. There are already 6 or 7. Since we had to reorganize the header anyway, we also fixed several long-standing issues with it. One of those issues fixed is block withholding attacks. The only way previously to defend against them was incentives and KYC. With the new format, it is possible to defend completely at a technical level. It also increases the nonce space significantly, avoiding the need for mining hardware to handle Bitcoin internals - often incorrectly, a problem that interferes with generating payouts to miners directly.
