Mildly spicy take: If you aren't willing to learn how to prep your grad students for jobs outside of academia, you aren't doing your job as an advisor. Academia isn't right for everyone, and we fail students by choosing not to learn what is necessary for alternative career paths.

Assuming that people getting excellent positions when they leave a lab is because they received excellent mentorship from their PI is a big assumption. Many get these positions DESPITE abusive, toxic, or absent mentorship.

Or maybe it's the other way around? Either way, I love it

I did not get an NSF GRFP in 2018 nor was I awarded an F31 this year after resubmitting my app. For those feeling disappointed in their outcome on the NSF, I want to share my favorite quote: “Chase the dream, not the competition”. You are worthy of doing the research you want.

Yes please. My name seems simple enough but lots of ppl butcher it 🔪
Normalize asking people how to pronounce their names!
I have opinions about what is happening in Ukraine, and they have a lot to do with human psychology. Ultimately, I find it incredibly sad that it is possible to dehumanize others to the extent that it is. We need to always consider others as real humans just like ourselves.

I did not win an NSF GRFP. I want to share this particular review; I'm not sure what to say about it.

Today I realized that while all scientists are my people, I belong in the neuroscience club. I'm leaving my synthetic biology postdoc. Not sure what's next for me yet but please know it will be neuroscience-related! 🧠

Do you ever look back on your notes from school and think, "Holy crap I learned a lot"? 🤓

Pretty girls are often smarter than men
Grabbing a drink at a bar. Guy next to me starts talking to the bartender about Ukraine. I’m bored, so I listen. He pauses, turns, smiles at me and says, “You’re so pretty, you probably have no idea what I’m talking about, do you?” It did not end well for him.

And yet, the ego also helps us complete research. It's kind of mysterious. 🧐
I have jumped on the, "guess what, your mental health is more important than that experiment/paper/grant" train. 🚂 Please join if you desire, it's quite a marvelous ride.
