“I have come to hate my very existence. We find ourselves saying that those who died are better off. Even trying to speak, I am overwhelmed by tears.”
Such is the unbearable plight of the Amhara people, particularly those enduring the continuing carnage in northern Ethiopia. Their suffering has reached a point where the living envy the dead. In my judgment, Ethiopian history has witnessed no leader since the savagery of the sixteenth century as thirsty for blood as Abiy Ahmed. I regard him as the most gruesome, bloodiest, and most devious monster Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa have faced in modern times. The anguish of these civilians is an indictment of the political leadership presiding over their suffering. How much more blood must be shed before the conscience of humanity awakens?

AEPAC Statement Supporting Congressional Call for Urgent U.S. Diplomatic Action in Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa
The American Ethiopian Public Affairs Committee (AEPAC) expresses its full support for the letter addressed to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio by members of Congress concerning the deteriorating security situation in Ethiopia and the growing risk of a wider regional conflict in the Horn of Africa.
Taking into consideration the prolonged war in the Amhara region, the renewed war in Tigray, continued armed conflicts across other parts of Ethiopia, and the recent formation of the Alliance for Survival (AFS), AEPAC shares the serious concerns expressed by the congressional leaders regarding the escalating hostilities throughout Ethiopia, rising tensions between Ethiopia and Eritrea, the potential involvement of regional actors, and the grave humanitarian consequences of further conflict.
The escalating crisis underscores the urgent need for sustained U.S. diplomatic leadership, coordinated regional engagement, the protection of civilians, and a credible, inclusive, and sustainable peace process. Unresolved political and security challenges, regional tensions, and the risk of further armed conflict threaten to deepen instability and cause additional humanitarian suffering. Preventing a wider regional war must be an immediate priority.
AEPAC therefore endorses the recommendations in the congressional letter and urges the U.S. Department of State to take the following actions:
1. Appoint and empower a Senior Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa. Provide the envoy with sufficient authority to engage directly with the leadership of Ethiopia and Eritrea at the presidential level and coordinate diplomatic efforts with the African Union (AU), the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), and the United Nations (UN).
2. Press for an immediate ceasefire and a renewed peace process. Urge all parties to halt hostilities and pursue an inclusive, sustainable political settlement supported by independent monitoring and an effective dispute-resolution mechanism.
3. Prevent an interstate war between Ethiopia and Eritrea. Engage both governments directly at the highest diplomatic levels, press them to honor their commitments under the 2018 Jeddah Agreement, and warn Egypt, Sudan, and Gulf partners against providing military assistance or other support to armed proxies that could intensify the conflict.
4. Mobilize Gulf and regional partners to advance de-escalation. Work with countries across the Middle East and North Africa, as well as other influential regional actors, to coordinate diplomatic efforts, reduce tensions, and halt the supply of drones and other weapons used in attacks that endanger civilian lives.
5. Ensure humanitarian access and restore emergency response funding. Press the Government of Ethiopia to guarantee unfettered humanitarian access to all populations in need, restore essential emergency response funding, and provide Congress with detailed information on humanitarian assistance committed to Ethiopia since September 23, 2026.
6. Protect civilians and strengthen accountability. Urge all parties to uphold international human rights standards and applicable international humanitarian law, support meaningful accountability for those responsible for war crimes and other serious human rights violations, and provide protection and assistance to survivors of sexual and gender-based violence. Civilians and affected communities must also have a meaningful role in peacebuilding and reconciliation.
7. Reinstate targeted sanctions and visa restrictions. Apply these measures consistently against individuals on all sides who are responsible for atrocities or whose actions contribute to escalating violence and regional instability.
8. Rebuild U.S. diplomatic and analytical capacity in the region. Strengthen sustained diplomatic engagement, regional expertise, and early-warning capabilities, and provide regular briefings to Congress on the administration’s strategy to prevent further conflict in Ethiopia, the Horn of Africa, and the broader region.
Preventing a wider war in the Horn of Africa is far less costly—in human, economic, and strategic terms—than managing its consequences after escalation. Further conflict would place additional civilian lives at risk, deepen displacement and humanitarian suffering, threaten regional security, and undermine stability across an already fragile region.
The United States has an important role to play in supporting preventive diplomacy, encouraging regional cooperation, protecting vulnerable populations, and advancing a credible and sustainable path toward peace. Such efforts should be guided by respect for human rights, accountability, sovereignty, and the legitimate aspirations of the peoples of the region for security, dignity, and lasting stability.
AEPAC urges the Department of State to respond with the urgency this crisis demands and supports the congressional leaders’ request for a briefing on the Department’s strategy no later than November 30, 2026.
The American Ethiopian Public Affairs Committee reaffirms its commitment to peace, civilian protection, and lasting stability in Ethiopia and throughout the Horn of Africa. We call on U.S. policymakers and regional partners to act decisively and diplomatically before the current crisis escalates into a wider and more devastating regional war.

Ethiopia remains one of the world's poorest and most fragile countries, devastated by years of large-scale warfare, mass displacement, hunger, and the destruction of essential infrastructure. Millions struggle with inadequate access to clean water, electricity, healthcare, and education. Doctors and teachers struggle to feed their own families, while hospitals and schools face desperate shortages. Against this backdrop, reports of the acquisition of 12 Russian Su-35 fighter jets and plans for four S-400 air defence systems are simply astonishing. Meanwhile, the government promotes glittering corridors resembling Dubai, projects that appear to serve a privileged political elite while much of Ethiopia's population, approaching 130 million, struggles with poverty.
The multibillion-dollar #Chaka Palace project raises equally serious questions about national priorities, public expenditure, and accountability. Ireland, Denmark, the United States, the United Kingdom, and other development partners have supported Ethiopia's people for decades. Their taxpayers deserve transparency about how international assistance interacts with a government budget that also finances sophisticated weaponry and prestige projects. Humanitarian assistance must continue reaching vulnerable civilians, but military procurement and extravagant public spending deserve rigorous scrutiny. The contrast between these priorities and the suffering of ordinary Ethiopians is morally staggering.

There is absolutely nothing in common between Putin and Abiy Ahmed Ali—nada. What we are witnessing today is a dangerous first: an Ethiopian leader wholly compromised by foreign UAE interests, selling out our national sovereignty. Even more devastating is Abiy’s war on our heritage.
While Russia fiercely respects and safeguards its ancient Orthodox roots, Abiy has turned his back on the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. Under his governance, the unthinkable has become a daily reality: innocent Orthodox Christians massacred and ancient, holy churches reduced to ashes. Never in centuries !
Putin Hosts Abiy in Moscow as Ethiopia–Russia Ties Deepen
Moscow, October 27, 2026. Russian President Vladimir Putin is due to hold talks tomorrow with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. Putin formally invited Abiy to the third Russia–Africa Summit, which takes place in Moscow on October 28–29. The two leaders last met in New Delhi in September, where Putin said they had discussed almost everything about their relations while riding in the car together.
Eritrean president also in Moscow
Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki is also in the Russian capital. He arrived on October 27 to take part in the summit. His presence has drawn attention because of the history between the two neighbors. Abiy's 2018 declaration with Isaias formally ended the state of war that had persisted since the 1998–2000 border conflict, and it earned Abiy the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize. Both leaders will be at the same summit, so a meeting on its sidelines is possible, but none has been officially announced.
Leaders from the security world
Both Putin and Abiy have intelligence backgrounds. Putin served in the KGB and later headed the FSB. President Boris Yeltsin appointed him prime minister in 1999, and he became acting president when Yeltsin resigned that December.
Abiy's military career was in intelligence and communications. In 1995 he served with the UN peacekeeping force in Rwanda, and during the 1998–2000 war with Eritrea he led an intelligence team that located Eritrean positions. He became prime minister on April 2, 2018, after Hailemariam Desalegn resigned.
An expanding partnership
In September 2025, Russia and Ethiopia signed an action plan between Rosatom and the Ethiopian electric power corporation to advance a nuclear power project in Ethiopia. Abiy says trade between the two countries has grown several times over since then. Russia has also agreed to more than triple the number of Ethiopian students it hosts and to cover their costs.
The two countries share a measure of history and culture. Both have ancient Orthodox Christian traditions, though Abiy himself is Pentecostal and both nations are religiously diverse. Both also take pride in their independence: Ethiopia resisted European colonization, and Russia has long defined itself against Western dominance. Abiy has called Russia and Ethiopia "brotherly" nations. As fellow BRICS members, they are expected to use the Moscow summit to consolidate a partnership that is political, economic, and increasingly strategic. 🇷🇺 🇪🇹

Thank you very much, Breitbart News, for bringing international attention to the horrific massacre of 60 Ethiopian Orthodox Christians. This is not an isolated tragedy. The persecution of Amhara Christians and the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church has continued for decades, with repeated killings, displacement, and attacks on innocent worshippers. I sincerely hope the American Christian community will stand in solidarity with one of Christianity’s oldest churches, a remarkable guardian of our shared Christian heritage. The Ethiopian Orthodox tradition has preserved the ancient Garima Gospels, among the earliest surviving illuminated Christian manuscripts, as well as the complete Book of Enoch and the Book of Jubilees within its biblical tradition. This is a spiritual heritage of profound significance to Christianity and humanity. I am deeply grateful to Breitbart for highlighting this suffering and hope its coverage will inspire greater awareness, solidarity, and action. #EthiopianOrthodoxPersecution #AmharaGenocide #ChristianPersecution

THANK YOU, BBC WORLD NEWS, FOR HIGHLIGHTING THE PLIGHT OF THE AMHARA PEOPLE AND THE ETHIOPIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH.
Thank you, BBC, for drawing international attention to the reported massacre of more than 60 Ethiopian Orthodox Christians, including children. This is not an isolated atrocity but part of a longstanding pattern of violence against Amhara civilians and attacks on their religious communities. The Ethiopian Orthodox Church has documented decades of persecution. I hold Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's government politically responsible for protecting these communities and demand an independent investigation into allegations of state complicity, ethnic persecution, and attacks on the Church. I am particularly concerned by accounts of remarks attributed to Abiy at a meeting in Nazret, which deserve independent scrutiny. The Amhara and Tigrayan peoples share Semitic linguistic and cultural traditions, and their rights must be defended without qualification. The international Christian community, particularly organizations that mobilized over the persecution of Christians in Nigeria, must now bring equal attention to Ethiopia. No Christian conscience should remain silent while innocent children, priests, and worshippers are killed.

Ms. Ingraham, I am deeply grateful for highlighting this. The structural violence against Ethiopian Orthodox Christians, heirs to one of the oldest Christian traditions in existence, deserves far greater international attention. Ethiopia, the world's second oldest Christian nation, has preserved extraordinary treasures of Christian civilization, including the Book of Enoch and the Book of Jubilees. What is at stake is not merely religious persecution but the danger of civilizational erasure. At the very centre of this tragedy stands Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, whose government I believe bears responsibility for the systematic assault on this ancient Christian heritage. I am equally concerned about his government's relationship with the United Arab Emirates and what I regard as its role as a UAE proxy. The silence of those who profess to defend human rights and religious freedom is profoundly disturbing.

At least 47 Orthodox Christians were killed in a late-night attack in Shirka Woreda, in Ethiopia’s Oromia Region, Borkena news reports. Armed groups surrounded farming families in their homes around 10:00 PM, blocked the exits, opened fire and set the houses on fire. Local sources told Borkena the attackers included local armed groups and others from the neighboring Bale Zone. Residents asked police to step in, but the outlet reports that officers did not act, saying they had no official orders. Families are now burying their dead among the ashes of their homes. Let us pray for an end to the persecution of Christians in Ethiopia.

Children terrified. Cross necklaces being cut off. Faith turned into a source of fear.
If the footage shows children being pressured to abandon their Christian faith, this is a grave violation of their freedom of belief. No child should face intimidation over religion, and no community should live in fear of being targeted for its faith.
Where is the protection? Where is the accountability? How long can innocent people suffer while those responsible escape justice?
