“[W]ander their way back to the aorta somehow”. I am dying…
As a cardiologist & developmental biologist, I can attest here today that my field has failed. 😔
Replying to @yourheartdoc1 @Hragy
There is no reason that should be the case. My recollection from embryology is that the coronary arteries develop in the myocardium initially and then wander their way back to the aorta somehow, which introduces a component of randomness.
“Hacking the FDA”? Really?
Is that all it takes to get a dangerous “Trojan Horse” cancer drug to patients?
Somehow, folks who work with computers think that computers may be able to fake through a clinical trial in the real world.
Folks who work in clinical trials don’t believe that’s possible.
Ignorance v. self-interested hubris. Something’s gotta give.
“Calling Arthur Caplan…”

At this point lets just take death row or LWOP prisoners and start testing these AI drugs on them, or allow anyone to volunteer at their own risk if its a rare condition. I believe this will be the norm eventually.
I’m not saying that $1.8B to try to build a “virtual cell” is the worst idea biomedicine.
I mean, Theranos existed.
Wake me up when we have a predictive model of the rocket.
Would you get on one that was only tested digitally?
A universal predictive model of the cell would dramatically accelerate science, allowing biologists to perform experiments digitally. Today we’re announcing a major partnership with the DOE and NIH. The goal of this partnership is to generate the data that will be needed to build an accurate model of the cell with artificial intelligence.
Isomorphic, Google DeepMind, and Meta are joining us as founding partners in the Virtual Biology Initiative. This is the beginning of a large scale coordinated effort to map cellular biology to power the development of digital models of life. Other leading scientific institutions and consortia including the Allen Institute, Broad Institute, Gladstone Institutes, the Human Cell Atlas, the Human Protein Atlas, the Wellcome Sanger Institute, as well as NVIDIA, are working together as part of this international scientific project.
Creating a predictive model of the cell is one of the most important challenges for the next decade of science. The insights that come from this could unlock a far greater understanding of disease, and open new paths for cures.
We invite the worldwide scientific community and other funders to join us in this effort.
This is good.
Now, instead of blaming mothers for vaccinating their children we can now blame them for not vaccinating themselves.
A major new study of 3.7 million people by Sweden’s @karolinskainst suggests that some cases of autism and other neurodevelopmental conditions could be linked to infections passed from mothers to their babies.
This means that, by preventing severe infections and inflammation in pregnant mothers, vaccines may help lower key risks for conditions like autism.

Classic example of the #CaplanRule, which states that the most ethical course of action is the opposite of that suggested by Arthur Caplan.
Amazing that I have yet to see a counterexample.
In a recent podcast, bioethicist Arthur Caplan proudly proclaimed that he has pioneered using critically disabled people for research at NYU Langone Health.
Caplan says that not only is this going on now at NYU, but there are dozens of such research centers starting up all over the country, using “brain dead” people for drug testing and other research purposes.
Caplan admits in the podcast that people with a brain death diagnosis are not biologically dead, but that their “deaths” are a social construct -- which is why they can be successfully kept on life support for these experiments.
When people who are registered organ donors have infections or other conditions that make them unable to donate, the family is approached and asked if doctors might keep their loved one on life support to do some tests.
According to Caplan:
“We started by saying that it might advance transplant. We're going to study something, maybe an artificial organ or some immune suppressing drug. And if you give us permission -- they wanted to be organ donors, but they can't, they clearly wanted to help -- let's do it that way. And if the family concurred (which reminding listeners, they don't have to legally in an organ donation situation, but we were trying to be safe here in this idea of studying the body) if we take them for 72 hours, would you give us permission? And a lot of people did.”
Dr. Caplan’s eagerness to keep critically ill people on life support for experimentation contrasts sharply with his opinion when the parents of Jahi McMath (a young girl declared brain dead) wanted to keep her on life support to preserve her life. At that time, Caplan wrote, “Keeping her on a ventilator amounts to the desecration of a body.”
Last year, scientists were widely criticized for proposing the idea of creating “bodyoids,” non-sentient human clones grown in artificial wombs, for research purposes.
Move over, bodyoids: such experimentation is already being performed today, on actual humans, with no waiting.
It is highly unlikely that the families of these unfortunate people are being informed that their loved ones are only “socially dead” when doctors obtain “consent” for these experiments.

My daughter needed an MRI a while back (nothing serious) so her doctor scheduled her one at the local hospital. Later that day I got a call from Cigna and the guy on the line said they’d gotten the request, it was approved, but they wanted me to know that there was an MRI imaging center in my town that would charge me significantly less for the service, said it would be the same cost for them (Cigna) either way but my copay would be a lot less at this other place if I wanted to switch. They arranged everything for the appointment switch during the same phone conversation. Fantastic service from them
Most of what you hate about health care and health care costs is the fault of your hospital
🙄
Loving the move to Florida especially all the vitamin D action. Now on route to Washington DC for important meetings including #MAHA events. The mission to free the world from corporate psychopathic tyranny continues 👊
Rather than continuing our discussion, this guy just blocks me. 🤷♂️
Don’t know why he is so hopped up about Eliquis.
Also doesn’t seem to understand that healthcare ultimately needs to be paid for by somebody. NHS isn’t free. 🙄
An athlete does not go to the doctor because he can’t throw better or run fast enough
And he doesn’t go to his trainer or coach for a sprained ankle or a busted knee
But at least … the athlete doesn’t complain about the doctor who doesn’t make him run faster or throw better
If you want to go from ill to well, see a doctor
If you want to go from well to better get a coach
But if you think the healthcare system should be responsible for wellness … you’d be mistaken
Sooner or later everyone will need healthcare
And if the whole system is devoted to “wellness” there won’t be anyone to care for the sick.
“congenital [sic] heart disease” 🙄
KANSAS CITY. We need to talk.
Have you ever visited Kansas City? It's terrible. Combine the fake niceness of the midwest with the industrial air pollution of the rust belt and the constant risk of congenital heart failure of the deep south and that's Kansas City in a nutshell.
BUT NO, instead of doing the humane thing and wiping Kansas City off the map or turning it into a leper colony, the Powers That Be made TWO of these godforsaken places separated by a state line and a repulsive river. I mean I'll say this, at least the problem is CONTAINED in a geographically distinct area.
When you get off the plane and inhale deeply and get a snout full of burned fat that these people call BBQ, you know you've arrived in America's answer to hell. I like that.
Who would want to live in this place? No one. I mean NO ONE. When Kelce and Swift did their little Forrest and Jenny routine and said their fake vows (in NYC) they immediately bought a house in Cleveland. You hear that, Kansas City? CLEVELAND. Taylor took one look at the real estate offerings of Missouri's 57th best city and said "Hey hon this is great and all but how about we live in Ohio?"
Patrick Mahomes chooses to spend the summer in Texas, which is so hot one time I burned the inside of my mouth by breathing the air. But hey, at least it's not Kansas City.
Speaking of abandoning Kansas City, you know who else is doing that? The Chiefs! They unceremonially fled Missouri like so many of that state's unwed fathers before them and moved across the river to KANSAS Kansas. Rearranging the deck chairs on the titanic sure, but I assume that this is just the first step and my 2035 they'll be playing in Sacramento.
Andy Reid - a Kansas City 9 - oversees a group of past, present, and future criminals that they're trying to pass off as an NFL team. To save time, they should just imprison every new Chiefs player the moment they are drafted. It's a public safety issue at this point.
Ok ok. That's enough smack talk. Good luck to you on your season opener tonight. I sure hope that Mahomes didn't rush his ACL recovery process! Don't even worry about it! He'll be fine! Nik Bonitto would never intentionally accidentally tackle him low. You can trust us. We're rooting for you, Patty! You and your homeless alcoholic father.

I remember discussing this with some doctors in advocacy. I can’t remember eh uh group. They wanted to pass a resolution supporting a ban on gas stoves.
I brought up the point that it was an observational study and could be wrong. Certainly wasn’t strong enough evidence to justify a huge cost that would come with a gas stoves ban.
They just couldn’t accept the fact that the study might be wrong. Or that somehow replacing all the gas stoves with electric wouldn’t be worth the enormous cost.
This is why most doctors shouldn’t participate in advocacy.
Hard to articulate what is so off-putting about this…
