the issue lies in both extremes: demonizing Troy as irredeemable bc of fanon invented bad behavior towards Shane *&* woobifying him as an innocent victim with nothing to atone for whose actions did no harm are both complete misreads of his character that undermine his story arc.

troy's redemption arc is so much more interesting when people don't try to brush it off every single bad action he had in the past. like, you think it's not that big of a deal and this makes the redemption look unnecessary

you can do a longfic starting in the middle of a canon conversation you can write 100 words drabbles you can write an experimental one-shot in second person you can write “he says” 300 times you can write no dialogue, all dialogue, you can do whatever!!! is free!!!

- some readers are new to the fandom - sometimes you need to establish what’s canon in your fic - it’s good practice for writing original fiction and something a lot of modern published authors do badly and it’s very obvious they got that habit from fanfics
