📌 “Association of a standardized community health worker enrollment with cancer outcomes and clinical trial enrollment: A secondary case-control analysis” Presented at #ASCOQLTY26 @ASCO We found that prior enrollment in a standardized community health worker program (IMPaCT) was associated with 61% higher odds of early-stage cancer diagnosis (aOR 1.61, 95% CI 1.09–2.38). 🔹 220 cases vs 440 matched controls with no prior CHW enrollment 🔹 Median CHW enrollment duration: 6 months 🔹 Cases diagnosed a median of 2 years after CHW enrollment 🔹 No significant difference in no-show rates 🔹 Trial enrollment 6.4% vs 4.3%, not significant Upstream CHW programs may confer sustained downstream benefits for early cancer detection. Thank you to Dr. Yehoda Martei @ymartei for the opportunity to work on such impactful research and to help move the needle on cancer health equity. Grateful to Dr. Shreya Kangovi, Dr. Carmen Guerra and all co-authors @PennMedicine @AbramsonCancer @PC3Innovation Thank you to all who stopped by and engaged in rigorous discourse on the role of community health workers in cancer care; and for the feedback! 📄 asco.org/abstracts-presentat…

Community health workers may help improve equity in breast cancer care! In a pilot study (83% Black patients), community health worker support significantly reduced barriers to clinical trial participation, including medical mistrust, concerns about research ethics, patient rights, privacy, and trial awareness. A promising, scalable, equity-focused strategy to improve cancer care and clinical trial access! Important work by @ymartei and colleagues! #ASCOQLTY26 #CancerEquity

When Dr. Yehoda Martei (@ymartei) began cancer research in Botswana, she came with data & clinical answers. Patients wanted something else: a survivor who looked like them. So she built a study around survivor stories. It worked. Full Yelle episode: youtu.be/MnO8XIZ3xo4

Thanks for amplifying our study conducted in Botswana. There is untapped potential in partnering with cancer survivors and sharing their stories to address cancer distress. Grateful to all the patients who partnered with us.
🎥 Can survivor stories heal distress? In Botswana, over 67% of breast cancer patients reported moderate-to-high distress. This pilot study found that peer-led survivor videos reduced distress and alleviated fear and body image concerns. ✅ Cultural relevance matters. 📉 29% drop in distress after two videos. 📌 A low-cost, scalable psychosocial intervention for LMICs. 🔗 Read full study 👉 doi.org/10.1200/GO-24-00474 #GlobalOncology #CancerSupport #PsychoOncology #ASCO #Botswana @JCO_ASCO @ASCOPres @PallOncCoP @ASCO @JCOGO_ASCO @osutcuoglu @ErulEnes @tkoraysahin @realbowtiedoc @DrMirallas @myESMO @OncoAlert @oncodaily @Xesiloglu @kbaskurtt @myCARG @BbaharK

Representation in clinical trials is a critical scientific focus needed to address this! How does a phase III trial #INAVO120 testing a drug commonly associated with hyperglycemia as a side effect, only enroll 0.6% Blacks? #ASCO25 #asco2025 @WinnAwards

Agree. Excellent discussion by Dr @AngieDemichele @PennCancer- beautifully delivered, well- analyzed, and thoughtful critical review of the data and clinical utility.👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I am loving Dr. DeMichele’s comments, including her insistence on longer survival and discussion of crossover issues. #ASCO25 #plenary #serena-6 Also loving audience questions. They are asking hard questions on the utility of PFS. I feel happy that the education is spreading and audience are asking the questions that people didn’t use to ask a few years ago. The status quo does seem to be changing. That makes me happy. Also, for a full discussion of all issues that are being discussed, read CSO checklist paper-sciencedirect.com/science/ar…
