These were so successful at lowering rents that the city outlawed these within a few years over concerns from neighbors worried about parking (of course) and too much density. If the city council actually cared about affordable housing, they’d be clamoring to bring these back.

We should stop making enough paper towels to meet demand, say 60% of existing demand, and see what happens to the price of paper towels

The rightoids on this site would have you believe that every liberal bastion is emptying out and homes values are getting crushed but the reality is most home price drops are concentrated in the South while the liberal West and Northeast are, comparatively, much more in demand.
San Francisco and New York City are really the only hot real estate markets in the entire country right now. Ranked by Price Reductions:

This is nuts. Seattle has 23 homicides YTD, a homicide rate of about 2.9/hundred thousand residents (and from a homicide perspective very low across the US). And even we are getting smoked by El Salvador, a country of 6m.
El Salvador homicide update: The country is on track to have its lowest year ever, with just 60% of the homicide rate of stereotypically-peaceful Canada. The country is now *very* safe.

Why do these tech guys always have to make a post about their layoffs? They never look good doing it, it wasn't a thing until like 5-7 years ago. I don't get it.
Today we’re laying off a large part of the Airtable team. This is not a reflection of their work but a reflection of our deep belief that small teams ship more and better. For Airtable, better is about to look like: - A new Core team shipping your top requests monthly (already 30+ shipped in 3 weeks) - Upgraded Omni, Airtable Canvas, a stronger MCP, and BYO agents, coming soon - New Performance and Infra teams focusing on speeding up bases and increasing limits on records, fields, and syncs To everyone leaving: thank you. If you’re hiring, these are excellent people and worth a call.

I don't understand why so much of modern leftism is just "if you don't think living in crime-riddled squalor is good you're right-wing"

New addition to the Lime bike family: a 10 mph speed limiter when you enter parks/shared paths. It's that easy Ideally, all car manufacturers should be required to install this. It would save thousands of lives, but the collective hissy fit/war on motorists would be unbearable

I've always found the Starbucks vs Local Coffee Shop thing mildly interesting because Starbucks fairly famously offers extremely generous benefits How many local coffee shops offer health care, equity, PTO, and tuition assistance to part time employees?
“A resolution passed on Thursday makes Philadelphia the first U.S. city to officially back the Starbucks Workers United boycott.” We don’t need Starbucks with so many good and local shops in the city and I’ll always stand by that

I've never understood the arguments around upgrades. The seat has to be available to even get an upgrade. We know airlines are expanding 1st and Business classes because they sell so well, so why should travelers expect upgrades? It's unlikely there's even a seat available.

I genuinely can’t remember the last time I was upgraded to Delta One. Even using a global upgrade certificate, it feels nearly impossible. For a status that requires a pretty absurd amount of loyalty/spend, the actual benefits just don’t feel very beneficial anymore.

🚨BROKEN: The Minneapolis City Council … yesterday voted 7-4 in favor of a requirement for DRIVERLESS robotaxis to have: “a human monitor physically present within the driver’s seat of the vehicle and with immediate access to controls for steering, braking, and acceleration.”

The Venn diagram of people who want the government to do something about $20 burritos and people who think ‘yes actually raising Seattle’s minimum wage to $22 an hour is a terrific idea’ is a complete circle.

This is really really cool, and I wish something the US was better at. However, the big caveat, and something none of these posts ever mention, is that you basically don't have property rights in China and most homes are on a 70 year land lease.
China opens four new high-speed rail lines in the same day today. The world's largest HSR network keeps growing bigger. 1. Xiongan <-> Shangqiu: 552 km 2. Yichang <-> Xingshan: 101 km 3. Xi'an <-> Ankang: 171 km 4. Harbin <-> Yichun: 318 km

This happened to my grandpa, too. He was 94, fell, they did scans on him and his body was full of cancer. Just sorry of left him alone and he died a few months later. It’s not like he would have responded to treatment anyways
getting old is insane. we found out last week my grandpa has cancer and the doctor was just like "he's 90 years old, he says it's not bothering him, we're just gonna leave it be, otherwise we'd make him miserable" and like. yeah he's kinda right

Katie Wilson did this with Denny Way bus lanes (v. popular!!) and then handed over all political control to stakeholder groups. Katie, just do stuff, that’s what we elected you for!
Turns out the “you can just do things” approach to governing is extremely popular.

The City of Seattle has a tax on sugary beverages which has led to less consumption of sugary beverages and ultimately declining tax revenue from that source. We also have an IZ fee which leads to less housing getting built. We should tax things we want less of, not more of!
Replying to @maxdubler
Chicago increased IZ from 10% to 20% in 2020. We delivered ZERO units downtown last year after averaging 4,000 a year for the past quarter century. You can see for yourself the results:

It's the craziest thing to me that IZ has not been struck down as an illegal taking.
