🎅💎 Advent of Prism: Part 2 - Data structures
Today we'll look at the trees related to the three literal data structures in Ruby: arrays, hashes, and ranges. We'll finally get to see some actual trees, and discuss where else these nodes can appear.

Shameless plug: I am writing a small book about all this, covering constants in depth.
Tentative title is "Ruby in Depth: Constants", because if the book works, I'd like to do a series that covers niche Ruby stuff exhaustively.

I am flirting with the idea of writing a little book about constants in Ruby. There's already something bootstrapped, and want a clean slate for each test case 100% free of global side-effects.
Test harness could not be more simple. There's ONE frickin helper:
def assert(bool)
raise unless bool
end
and a loop that executes each test case:
for test in test/**/*_test.rb; do
if ruby -Itest -rtest_preamble "$test"; then
echo "$test"
else
exit 1
fi
done
When something fails, there is a backtrace. You open the file and investigate why the assertion failed, the backtrace tells you which one it was.

I made a small documentation website that includes both the Ruby and C references for prism.
Much more to come on that as we build it out, but it's a start!

I wrote an article on the practical implications of object shapes in Ruby 3.2 and their consequence on performance, notably on the performance of the very common "memoization" pattern: railsatscale.com/2023-10-24-…

As promised, I am releasing a new gem today to add to the enhancements to the Rails 7.1 SQLite adapter. By simply installing the gem into your Rails 7.1 app, you get auto-populating columns, custom primary keys, virtual columns, and deferred foreign keys:
