My cover story for SCMP Magazine last Sunday delving into provenance research efforts at German museums to identify Chinese artefacts looted during the Boxer War.

Any artist who lives in Berlin & considers the weight of oppression for ALL marginalized people knows that there is no free speech in Germany. But to the xenophobia of one artist who toes the line of the German state is repulsive. Do better Steyerl. theguardian.com/world/2024/m…

This February, @yemingphoto visited China, determined to have her first & best Lunar New Year feels since the pandemic. When social media deliver copy-pasted experience, Zhang Xiao’s Shehuo photographs go beyond folk culture being cool again.

Replying to @YuanjinPhoto @yemingphoto
The story of shehuo is a story that's as much about how the modern world is changing traditions as about keeping them alive. @yemingphoto talks to Zhang Xiao about his @aperturefnd @peabodymuseum photobook, and his fascination into beauty in rural China. farandnear.substack.com/p/pr…
Thanks to everyone who spoke to me on the piece and to @davebesseling for the great edits and support. And to @TheKimWallFund @IWMF for supporting this story and helping me carry on Kim's memories.
Stay tuned for the next round of grantees announcing this month! iwmf.org/programs/kim-wall-m…

Very proud of our cover story this week.
Why German museums are scouring collections for looted Chinese artefacts scmp.com/magazines/post-maga…
The looting of Beijing by foreign troops in 1900-1901 transformed the city into an open-air art market, with imperial treasures selling on seemingly every corner. Curator Susanne Knödel tells me that the Chinese collection at her museum improved leaps and bounds shortly after.
The joint research project of seven museums @BoxerLoot is part of a broader endeavor to address European museums' colonial entanglement, which had, until recently, mostly focused on African artifacts as project lead @chowald5 points out

The conflict in Gaza has now killed at least 29 journalists. A 36-hour blackout this weekend halted communications, prevented journalists from sharing information from the ground. We echo @pressfreedom’s alarm and urge protection of journalists and news-sharing amid war.
CPJ is highly alarmed by reports of a communications blackout in Gaza alongside intensified bombing & ground operations by Israeli forces.
