Contrary to certain social media narratives, there has been a historic presence of Islam in Britain. Take Marmaduke Pickthall, born in 1875 to an Anglican reverend who could trace his ancestry to a knight of William the Conqueror. Famed for his English translation of the Qur’an, Pickthall dissented from British meddling in the Middle East and campaigned for the Ottoman cause.
To learn more about his life, read an extract from ‘A Great English Muslim’ by Dr. Jamie Gilham

Dear @MumbaiPolice, you need to do a #TukaramMundhe on motorists, especially two-wheeler riders, who are glued to their phones while driving. This is very dangerous for disabled pedestrians, who are particularly vulnerable while crossing the road.

Who gets remembered when we tell the history of capitalism in India?
Tata. Birla. Bajaj. Godrej; Parsis. Marwaris. Jains. Banias.
What about the Bohras, Khojas & Memons? They were among Bombay's most important trading communities. Their story is the subject of my new book. 1/10

A good day to share my favourite book on Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. It’s a brilliant intellectual history and one that instantly made me a Devji fanboy when I read it in grad school.

The English spy who promised he’d be Emperor of Arabia, and the Baghdad Khatun who ensured it couldn’t happen, taught Saudi king Abdelaziz intrigue is no game for amateurs. The king’s grandson, crown-prince MBS, is learning the same cruel lesson in Yemen. buff.ly/EjH9Czf

Out now! A new @HimalSouthasian investigation by Erin L Thompson on how Mary Slusser, a renowned US scholar, made her name as an expert on Nepal’s cultural heritage while illicitly buying sacred artefacts and smuggling them out to the United States.
Every investigation we publish at Himal means a lot, but this one especially hits home on a personal level for me as someone who grew up in Kathmandu and has seen the empty pedestals and niches where stolen gods once stood, has seen the communities still hoping that one day their gods will come home.
This story will help bring more of them back, and will add to the ongoing global movement and battle to recover Nepal's stolen heritage.

In a seminal essay, “The Absent Liberal”, Ramachandra Guha ventured that Indian liberalism “is a sensibility rather than a theory”, a contention affirmed in the late lamented CA Bayly’s Recovering Liberties.
It has only taken two decades, but I finally have a rejoinder. We have been looking in the wrong place. Indian liberals did develop a theory—not for British India but for Indian India.

Iran says no to US suggestion that it could says it could lift sanctions on Iranian oil. Turning oil prices into a strategic asset has been at the heart of Iran’s war strategy. It surprised US and changed the direction of the war. That Washington is prepared to lift sanctions on Iran to the tune of $14 billion, shows how effective this strategy has been. Tehran is not about to give it up, if anything it will interpret the sanction lifting idea as a sign of desperation in Washington and press on oil prices even harder.
Iran says it has no surplus crude oil to offer to international markets after US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Washington could lift sanctions on Iranian oil at sea.
