I was 11 years old when Russia bombed the Poti port in Georgia. Ear-splitting sounds, fear, and the persistent thought that I wouldn’t see my parents again are things I’ll never forget. After 14 years, Russia continues its brutality in Ukraine. The evil empire must fall. – at Georgia

Very good timing to see it in your feed.
November 22, 1994: US President Bill Clinton thanks Ukraine for giving up its nuclear weapons. In return, the USA will stand by Ukraine's side to preserve its independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity in the future. Ukraine and the USA share a vision of freedom.

Zurab Japaridze, one of the opposition politicians facing charges in Georgia’s so-called “sabotage case,” described today’s court hearing. Witnesses from the Georgian Dream aligned “United Neutral Georgia” claimed that the 2024 protests in Tbilisi were a CIA-funded coup attempt through USAID, called USAID/NED/CIA “hostile organizations,” and accused politicians, journalists, civil society and protesters of being part of a foreign-funded “agent network.” Japaridze says these were not interpretations , witnesses confirmed these statements in court. If you need any extra conspiracy theorists, you can definitely call these witnesses as their gossips are the only “evidence” in this case.

Irakli Kobakhidze just said the @OSCE has become a “tool of a political agenda” and that its resolution is based on “lies.” This is a familiar pattern: when international organizations criticize democratic backsliding, the Georgian government attacks the messenger instead of answering the substance of the criticism. “Unfortunately, the OSCE has also become involved in a coordinated process aimed at attacking the Georgian people and confronting the will expressed by the Georgian people.” He says. Criticism from democratic partners is not an attack on the Georgian people ,it is a response to the actions of the government. Blaming external actors for every criticism is a familiar tactic used to avoid accountability.

❗️ This is the reality of Georgia’s current political climate: in a court case against 8 opposition politicians, a Georgian Dream aligned group ( United Neutral Georgia) is presenting claims that the United States is a “hostile state” and alleging CIA involvement in a coup plot, as told by the lawyer, Omar Purceladze. EU leaders Ursula von der Leyen, Kaja Kallas, and Marta Kos were also named as alleged supporters of an “agent network.” What was once a country aspiring to join the EU is now seeing conspiracy theories about its Western partners enter court proceedings.

🚨 Liberals demand urgent medical care for @Helenkhosh, leader of political party @DroaParty. Unlawfully imprisoned for nearly 10 months, her health is rapidly deteriorating while she is being denied proper medical treatment. Without care, she risks irreversible damage to her health that could leave her unable to walk. The Georgian Dream must act now and ensure Elene Khoshtaria receives the treatment she urgently needs. @liberalinternat

According to lawyer Shota Tutberidze, the health condition of the detained leader of the @DroaParty, Elene Khoshtaria @Helenkhosh, has deteriorated. The lawyer stated that two weeks have already passed since they requested the penitentiary facility to develop and present a treatment plan and to organize a meeting. However, they have not received a response to this request to date. "Elene Khoshtaria has been unlawfully detained in the correctional facility for 10 months now, where a gradual and noticeable deterioration of her health condition began 4 months ago. During every visit, we, her lawyers, notice symptoms that could indicate an alarming condition. These include: - Severe joint pain; - Difficulty moving; - Periodic restriction of joint mobility, due to which she is sometimes unable to even write and requires a cane to move around. Elene Khoshtaria did not intend to make this information public. However, after becoming convinced that both the prison medical staff and the director of the facility failed to show proper attention, she decided to share the information about her condition with the public. Elene has no complaints against the facility staff, specifically the nurses and officers. However, the attitude of the facility's medical personnel and director towards this issue is noteworthy — the medical examinations or procedures they have conducted over these 4 months have been sporadic, non-systemic, and ineffective. Because she still lacks the necessary answers and a treatment plan, we consulted with Elene's treating physicians at a clinic in Turkey. According to the evaluation of the Turkish doctors, without proper treatment and in the event of further deterioration, Elene's health could suffer irreversible damage—for example, she might no longer be able to move without a wheelchair. The assessments and recommendations sent by the Turkish doctors were handed over to the medical staff of Penitentiary Facility No. 5 approximately 2 months ago, immediately upon receipt. Furthermore, it has been two weeks since Elene Khoshtaria's lawyer approached the penitentiary facility requesting the development and presentation of a treatment plan for the political prisoner, as well as the organization of a meeting. To this day, we have not received a response to this request, which once again demonstrates the Penitentiary Service's negligent attitude toward the health of prisoners and the obligations prescribed to them by law," states Shota Tutberidze.

BREAKING: Six participants in the October 4 #GeorgiaProtests have been sentenced to prison terms of up to five years. Unlike many others, they refused plea deals because they would have required admitting guilt. Among those sentenced is 72-year-old doctor Giorgi Chakhunashvili, who received a five-year prison sentence. Ia Darakhvelidze was sentenced to two years in prison.

I congratulate Georgia and the Georgian people on their Independence Day. Our two nations share long-standing ties and a common understanding of the value of freedom and dignity. I wish Georgia peace, unity, strength, and prosperity. We count on a mutually beneficial relationship and Ukraine stands ready to move toward this.

Sally Bakradze on the long-term effects of exposure to the chemical agent used by GD during last December’s crackdowns: “Photos were taken in April–May. Symptoms began in March, came back every 10 days, each time worse: swelling, burning, itching around the eyes. The peak was May 18. It started burning, itching. I rushed home and in 30 minutes my face looked 30 years older. I thought I’d lose my mind. I saw dermatologists, ophthalmologists, allergists, neurologists — no one could explain it. Final diagnosis: keratitis, but the cause couldn’t be identified. One doctor noted that keratitis can be triggered by chemically contaminated water. Only Dr. Telia suspected a delayed reaction to a substance that had entered my system. Neither he nor I considered that tear gas and water cannon exposure could show up 2 months later. I was exhausted. I kept thinking: how could this happen when all my tests were clean, I take care of my health, my immunity is strong? Let them summon me. I have nothing to hide. Just tell me — what was I poisoned with?” #theCamiteCase
Dozens of Georgians have begun sharing testimonies about last year’s crackdowns — here is one from Mariam Japaridze, posted on Facebook: “The BBC report hit me incredibly hard emotionally. This is me in December last year. Two weeks after the crackdowns my eyes were still swollen and red. My skin burned on the outside, and inside — my airways, stomach, and mouth lining — everything felt scorched. My gums bled and hurt. I couldn’t sleep for two months: I had asthma attacks so severe that nothing helped. Closing my eyes caused unbearable pain. Once, when I tried to get out of bed, I collapsed. My mother barely managed to revive me. And yet that evening I was back at the protest. Despite everything, people like me — poisoned, burned, beaten — kept going out every single day, and we are still fighting for our country. My health still carries the marks of that chemical exposure. Even a year later, I’m dealing with the consequences. I always knew — felt it with my whole body — that they were making us breathe something horrible. For a year we only knew it, without proof. Now we have proof. This is me, one of thousands. And this is one of the crimes the Georgian Dream regime committed against unarmed people. Justice must be served, and we must finish what we started — to the very end.” 📷 Mariam Japaridze

On the very first day of the protest, I was poisoned by the substance mixed in the water canon. I was in the middle of Rustaveli, standing very close to the riot police. The water sprinkled all over my face, I lost coordination, couldn't move. My colleague recognized me and walked me to the ambulance, where I spent around 15 minutes to regain my senses. Face, throat, everything was burning. For 4 or 5 months since being poisoned, I had very frequent, almost daily nose bleeds, which started on that day. Georgian Dream never disclosed what substance was mixed in water canon that day despite many efforts from various groups. Dozens reported some sort of long effects they experienced after being poisoned on that day. BBC investigation now suggests that WW1 toxic compound was used on us. youtube.com/watch?v=z4-koO91…

All these cities are located in Ukraine’s Donetsk and Luhansk regions, the so-called #Donbas. All these cities have been already reduced to ashes by the Russian army. All these cities were once full of Ukrainians – children, families. Ukrainians whom Russian war criminals have either killed, captured, forcibly transferred, or driven from their homes under relentless attacks – now cynically calling a "brotherly nation". Having left nothing but ruins behind, Putin still seeks to seize and destroy more, to turn new cities into the same lifeless wasteland. Russia’s war is not just against Ukraine’s territory – it is against the very right of Ukrainians to exist. The U.S., European and other partners have the strength to make Russia stop. Strong, coordinated actions grounded in justice, sovereignty, and Ukraine’s territorial integrity will bring a just and lasting peace.

In November 2020, my friend Giorgi and I organised a series of demonstrations against the falsification of parliamentary elections and politically motivated COVID-19 restrictions under the Georgian Dream regime. During one of these protests, we were arrested (my second of five arrests). After our detention, Giorgi was repeatedly and violently assaulted by police officers while I was forced to watch. His hands were handcuffed behind his back as police officers took turns beating him and slamming his forehead against the concrete, all in the backyard of the Ministry of Internal Affairs’ central building. He was then sentenced to three days in a detention facility. I was subjected to a month-long trial that ultimately ended with a fine. Today, the European Court of Human Rights delivered a judgment in our favour in the case of Mjavanadze and Rukhadze v. Georgia. The Court found that both of our rights under Article 11 of the European Convention on Human Rights, the right to freedom of peaceful assembly, had been violated. It also ruled that my right to a fair trial under Article 6 was breached, as the domestic court relied solely on an uncorroborated police statement to convict me, effectively shifting the burden of proof onto me. The Court recognised that our protest addressed issues of public interest and that our arrests were unjustified. It concluded that the Georgian authorities acted disproportionately and failed to uphold the fundamental standards of justice and democratic accountability. To everyone standing up to authoritarianism: truth and freedom do prevail. The road is long, often cruel, and rarely fair, but justice has a memory. Keep going. History belongs to those who refuse to give up on freedom.
