Cross country skiing: born out of necessity. You have to travel across snow.
Downhill skiing: probably born out of necessity. You have to travel down the mountain.
I’m pretty sure all other winter Olympic sports were born out of a dare. Maybe even a double dog dare.

In Dec 2024, the US-backed overthrow of Bashar al-Assad led to a jihadist takeover of Syria. The West called it “liberation.” But for Christians, it was the start of a nightmare. Thousands are being slaughtered. 2/13

This is, at its core, an 'unscientific' statement--the claim about 'settled science'.
As a professor/scientist, I always teach my students: science is the pursuit of truth. We are simply seeking to understand the world, and we do this by constantly challenging our assumptions. In fact, we're actively trying to prove them wrong!
Because of this, we must be ready, at any moment, to put aside everything what we thought we knew.
If we think an idea is 'settled' in science, we've stopped being a scientist.
