I was invited to be interviewed for a section of the Bloomberg/Hundai Art + Technology series. But here’s the thing. This series of interviews paired “pioneers'' with “artists.” I was the “pioneer.” An appealing young man was the “artist.” I deconstructed this binary as the following: a pioneer must be some kind of eccentric tinkerer - not even a full-fledged member of the educated engineering class, meaning a person fooling around in their garage, checking out what a new technology might accomplish in the spirit of experimentation, then accidentally falling upon a fruitful art format but executing it in an inelegant and awkward way later reconstructed as real “art,” then perfected and expanded upon by a next generation of true “artists.” In short, a pioneer was at best an inadequate artist, who didn’t actually count and, as implied by the Bloomberg binary, was NOT REALLY AN ARTIST AT ALL.
