I'm very very sad tonight. I just learned that Stephen Biesty passed away in 2024 at 63... He is one of my favorite artist. Rest in peace.

If British governance is to be drastically improved, I expect that many of its reformers will have come through a Civic Future programme. Glad to see this parallel institution take a more permanent form.
Since 2022, Civic Future has grown from a single Fellowship into policy courses, workshops, crisis simulations and two Talent Programmes. It’s a school in all but name. So today we’re making it official: the Civic Future School for Government 🏛️🧵 civicfuture.org/school-for-g…

I know it’s a young adult novel from 1954 — so demands a knowledge of the Roman Empire of a graduate today — but gosh, I just read this and it’s so so good!

For me this book is perhaps the purest distillation of Englishness. It contains love, war, class, faith, the beauty of the landscape and the regret of feelings never spoken. All that in barely 100 pages.
Almost no plot. Almost nothing to it at all. A love scene that never happens. No resolution because there is nothing really to resolve. Memory, loss, healing. Real joy, but fleeting. A painting uncovered as lots of other lovely things fade away. One of best books I’ve read for ages.

A big win for universalism. Wealthier people pay into collective security and the public realm. They should also benefit from it. A nation-state isn’t a charity. Government isn’t an NGO. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cmn0…

The Tories are right to pledge to scrap the £100k childcare trap – and Labour should have acted first (as I wrote here). It’s not progressive for workers to be left tens of thousands of pounds worse off when they take on a promotion or more hours. And it’s particularly punitive for single-earner families in London and other big cities. arguably.uk/p/britain-cant-a…

Promotion should never come with a bill. Families shouldn’t be penalised because they choose to divide work & raising children in a way that works for them. We would scrap the £100k cliff edge for free childcare hours & Tax-Free Childcare, giving parents the freedom to make the choices that are right for their family.

Still love Tim, but this is an important moment. We are not going to be cowed from fixing a totally broken policy - where earning £1 over 100k loses you £20,000 - by people saying this means we are only "for the rich". Even the IFS has described this as cliff edge as "insane".

The Base have already more than proved their word/worth: support them further if you can. There *is* a culture war, but it can only be won at the deepest level, and with courage (and comedy/tragedy).
5,000 followers. Incredible. Welcome to all our new followers and thank you to everyone who has been here from the beginning. We were fed up with the state of the dramatic arts, so we’ve built a new dramatic production company, The Base, to make drama dangerous, intelligent, rigorous, sexy and genuinely free again. We make theatre, films, and podcasts exploring the greatness of the Western canon. We teach courses to build a new generation of fearless and courageous writers and actors. We have huge ambitions. We are actively looking for collaborators, artists, thinkers and backers who want to revitalise our deracinated and demoralised hemisphere. To win a culture war you must have culture. Below, we’ve gathered some of the work we’ve made over the last few years. If you’re new here, have a look around. If you want to get involved with our journey, consider subscribing or taking a course. Thank you for your support. Welcome to The Base.

The small Memorial to Heroic Self-Sacrifice in London's Postman's Park is quite moving: an assembly of earnest Arts and Crafts tiles commemorating people who died saving the lives of others. George Watts, the creator, in 1887: "My proposal, as you know, is plainly this: that the memory of the deeds of heroism constantly recurring in our everyday life should be perpetuated and honoured as such deeds should, for they illustrate the character of our people as a nation of great acts." And elsewhere: "It is a great pity that they should only receive the recognition of a newspaper paragraph, and be forgotten next day." I'm often struck by how figures in this period across many countries seem solemnly concerned with the character of the nation.
