“The fortunate position that I am in is that I am allowed to say things that are true even if they are unpopular or politically incorrect or likely to be howled down by some group or other.”
Douglas Murray (@DouglasKMurray)
Just so we’re clear, this is the same university where radical activism and openly genocidal rhetoric are totally fine. Just don’t disagree with the approved politics.
UCT’s Council should reject attempts to sanction @AdvOppenheimer and @DavidAnsara for publicly challenging university policy and defending contested speech. Universities should protect open debate, not punish those who question prevailing views.

UCT witch-hunt built on false claims about Lex Libertas
The think tank and advocacy group, Lex Libertas, today rejected calls for the suspension of Advocate Mark Oppenheimer and Mr David Ansara, CEO of the Free Market Foundation, from the Council of the University of Cape Town (UCT). It described the campaign against them as a witch-hunt, based on grossly false and defamatory claims about the organisation.
In a letter to the Chair of Council published on 15 October, UCT Alumni for Palestine demanded the suspension of both Council members. Their alleged offence is that they participated in the White Cross Project conference in Washington, D.C., which Lex Libertas hosted in September.
'This is a witch-hunt, plain and simple,' said Dr Ernst Roets, Executive Director of Lex Libertas. 'Two persons are being targeted, not for anything they did at UCT, but for the company they keep and the views they express. That is guilt by association and suppression of freedom of expression, and it should have no place at a university.'

The University of Cape Town has embroiled itself in another scandal over freedom of expression. An inquiry report recommends that advocate Mark Oppenheimer be disqualified from its Council and that fellow Council member David Ansara be suspended for six months. This Sunday the Council will be called upon to vote on whether Oppenheimer should be removed and Ansara sanctioned.

So in fact we actually can get robots, flying cars, superintelligence, fast internet on planes, space travel, space colonies, orbital data centers, unlimited energy, likely cures for nearly every disease, and more all in our life times. Pretty great.

Whatever your view on the Akademia project, this is remarkable. The pictures are from March, May, August and October. They have a vision, a budget, a timeline and deadlines, and they are getting it done. Every cent is spent where it is allocated and accounted for.

We’ve expanded the Haven Night Shelter in Kensington with 120 more beds, a bigger kitchen and new bathroom facilities. 💙🏡
These shelters offer dignified living space, meals, social services, and medical care to all those who move off the streets to rebuild their lives.
More shelter expansion projects coming to Bellville, Wynberg, District Six and Kuilsriver 👏
Critically important interview by Cilliers Brink. (@CilliersB)

South Africa’s economic underperformance is not an accident of history - it is largely the result of the choices we continue to make.
We talk endlessly about creating an enabling environment for business and investment, both local and international. Yet too often the actions do not match the rhetoric. Red tape, inconsistent policy, and slow decision-making continue to choke investment across almost every sector of the economy. Investors - and our own entrepreneurs - do not wait forever. Capital is mobile. Talent is mobile. Opportunity is mobile.
If we are serious about growth, jobs and shared prosperity, our leaders across government, business and civil society must become more self-critical. We cannot keep blaming external factors while avoiding the hard internal work: simplifying regulation, speeding up approvals, creating policy certainty, and treating business as a genuine partner rather than a problem to be managed.
The solutions are known. Many countries have done the hard work of cutting bureaucracy and prioritising execution. We can too - but only if we are honest enough to confront where we are falling short and disciplined enough to change.
What are we prepared to do differently, starting now?

Rwanda produces well-informed, visionary and articulate leaders because the bar for public office is high.
The government is playing a national development game, not a game of cadre deployment or rewarding comrades.
Key offices are filled on the basis of intellect and competence, not liberation slogans and chants.
That stands in sharp contrast to the African norm, where presidents' cronies and liberation-era faces are given positions regardless of ability, just to satisfy partisan ego.
On this front, Rwanda is miles ahead of most of the continent.

The fact that the ANC's only good news in this entire local election season is that their disputed 181 candidates may now stand, shows just how weak their broad public platform - and physical campaign - has hitherto been.
