The prevalence and necessity of VMs, Docker and its epigones, language-specific virtual environments, sandboxes, and VPNs is a sign of (IT) industry and community failure.
The fact that most people don't see it is a sign of cultural decay.

If you pick the wrong integrity crypto, your blockchain monetary system would break, but it can be rebuilt.
If you pick the wrong secrecy crypto, people could actually die and you canβt bring them back

I have been warning of Bitcoin fatigue for many *years*, especially in my "post maximalism" essay (2018)
Unfortunately, few heeded my warnings. Now, the disaster has come to pass.
The fatigue is from:
- bs politics
- no soft fork upgrades
- lying to ourselves, constantly about lightning (et all)
- courting the NGU class (Saylor et al)
- courting the "toxic" class whilst not having our own act together
- hating on users (for example ordinals)
The sad truth is: Bitcoin has, in fact, been dying the last 10 years. Not economically or technically -- but culturally.
Will make a video on this ~tomorrow

HOLY SHIT.
For crypto, this is one of the most insane posts of the year, but I'm guessing most people don't understand it.
Let me explain...
Bitcoin's accounts, and subsequently Ethereum's (and therefore every other EVM chain's), are built on a specific elliptic curve called secp256k1.
secp256k1 is a different elliptic curve from the one used across nearly every modern hardware device, including iPhones.
Modern devices mostly use a different curve called secp256r1, which is usually referred to as P-256 - one of the curves investigated in the article.
This mismatch has made it sooo difficult in the past to integrate crypto accounts natively into the security systems of modern hardware.
For example, Apple's Secure Enclave natively supports P-256, not secp256k1.
This has prevented crypto accounts from being able to use the same hardware protection as things like Apple Pay.
Same goes for the web with passkeys - WebAuthn uses P-256 signatures, which means Ethereum accounts using secp256k1 can't use them natively either.
But why did Satoshi do this?
The main theory for choosing secp256k1 was distrust of the P-256 curve - i.e. he thought there was an NSA backdoor.
A "backdoor" here basically means a secret, intentional weakness in the curve that would allow the NSA to exploit it and access private keys.
This was because P-256 was created with involvement from the NSA...
And the NSA provided a mysterious "seed" used to generate one of the curve's parameters without explaining where that seed came from.
This eventually transformed into a ~25-year-old mystery with a 5-figure reward for finding where this seed came from.
Claude figured it out in less than 30 mins.
And the best part is its internal thinking was: "Hmm wait... is it suspicious that such an obvious thing wasnβt discovered in 25 years?"
The solution was stupidly simple - just the time the curve was created, put into a specific random number generator function.
This doesn't 100% prove there's no backdoor yet, but it provides strong evidence that this seed wasn't secretly engineered by the NSA.
And Claude did this with "just a simple prompt" in under 30 minutes.

i repeat: models do not currently optimize for efficiency at inference time. efficiency incentivizes shortcuts. efficiency incentivizes finding simpler, cleaner abstractions. efficiency incentivizes putting effort into more future-proof refactors. efficiency incentivizes innovation in tooling and optimizing one's dev loop. efficiency incentivizes clear, simple writing. the models care too much for accuracy and plausibility and too little for efficiency and that is their most salient blindspot at the moment. a model should hate to waste effort. a model should seek process optimizations like a human seeks convenience. a model should desire doing more with less. and no, a train-time length penalty isn't it.

Whatβs fascinating about the classical NatSci worldview is it attempts to have knowledge without a knower

Replying to @GuntherEagleman
There is no afterlife, no cosmic justice, and no inherent purpose. Consciousness ends at death in an indifferent universe that will outlast every human concern.

today we publish a confidential computing breakthrough: encrypted kv cache offloading confidential.ai/blog/kv-offlβ¦
normally kv cache offloading breaks when you enable confidential computing on nvidia GPUs. result? 68% worse performance with a full cache.
well? we solved it. now, with encrypted KV offloading on B300s under cache duress:
- GPU <-> host transfers: 4 GB/s to 50 GB/s (12x faster)
- +141% toks/s on llm-dβs benchmark
- TTFT: 39s β 1.5s (27x faster)
- 3.15x more output toks/s with MiniMax M3
- cache hit rate with full cache: 39% to 95% (2.44x)
result? more tokens, money from your GPUs. faster confidential inference for your users. only at confidential.ai.
kudos to @b0xtch and @ameanasad for their groundbreaking work.
more breakthroughs soon.
this seems fine? 8.8 million Swedes is probably roughly what we have today. i'm more concerned whether a significant fraction of those 8.8 are actually Swedish or not. sure, raising the TFR would be nice but it doesn't seem like a priority given increasing automation.

No. The opposite: make all firmware images public. They can be dumped anyway. Your best bet is getting more eyes on them.
Open source everything, the code is not a moat. Obfuscation is even dumber today.
programming is ontological design, and if you don't do it, the agents are gonna do it poorly and incoherently

Kanyeβs Nazi era was one of the only truly transgressive pop culture moments in decades
Transgression is mass produced now, everything is a safe-horny simulacrum of rule breaking. But Kanye actually broke the rules and people lost their shit, an indicator of artistic genius
