As a young teenager, I wish I'd known about the spotlight effect. It's the idea that we radically overestimate how much our mistakes are noticed. It's easy to think others are paying attention to our cock-ups but most people are far more fixated on their own concerns. The original study was run by Thomas Gilovich (Cornell University) in 2000. He requested that participants arrive at his lab at a set time. Then he put them in a small room to fill out a questionnaire.  But Gilovich intentionally gave one participant the wrong start time. When that participant arrived 10 minutes after the others, Gilovich chided him for his tardiness and said he needed to wear a Barry Manilow T-shirt for the experiment (a singer specifically chosen to be deeply embarrassing).  Then Gilovich brought the "late" participant into the room where the others were completing the questionnaire. Just as he was sitting down, in another twist, Gilovich asked the participant to step back out... "I'm sorry", Gilovich said, "on second thoughts I think you're too late to take part". After these bizarre meanderings, Gilovich asked the participant to estimate how many people in the room had noticed his Manilow T-shirt.  The average estimate was 46%. Then Gilovich questioned everyone in the room as to whether they could remember what the "late" student was wearing. Only 23% had noticed it. The "late" participant thought they were the centre of attention, "in the spotlight". But most people are focused on themselves, rather than on others.  This means that if you make a faux pas, there's less reason to worry than we suspect - most people won't even notice it. To me, that's a pretty cheering lesson for teenagers and beyond. But there's a less happy implication for marketers. After all, the main point of the study is that even bizarre incidents playing out right in front of people are barely noticed. Too many marketers assume customers will pay attention to their latest campaign. But that's not the case. We need to go to remarkable lengths simply to be noticed. Luckily, behavioural science offers many simple ways to do this. If you’d like to learn these, I‘m running a training session on behavioural science for better marketing on Thursday 10th December. More details here: tickettailor.com/events/astr… (The drawing, by the way, is by the wonderful @sketchplanator).

Borat almost got made as a normal scripted comedy. Matt and Trey from South Park had come up with a brilliant scripted version. Sacha Baron Cohen just told 60 Minutes what changed his mind. He spent four days with Jim Brooks, the man behind The Simpsons and Taxi, working out the story. Then at dinner, The Exorcist director William Friedkin told him "you've got to make it in the real world." So he pitched Fox a movie where real people move the plot without knowing they're in a movie. He didn't think they'd go for it. They handed him $14 million. The first scene was Borat trying to buy a car. The guy pointed him to an ice cream truck instead. "Oh wow, the theory works." Borat went on to make $260 million. 20 years later he's back with Ali G: Who Iz I?, his first movie as a director, out this Friday.
Sacha Baron Cohen has made a career out of rendering himself unrecognizable. He’s played the lovable but ignorant reporter Borat, the fashion- and fame-obsessed narcissist Bruno, and the hip-hop idiot Ali G. This Sunday, Baron Cohen sits down with 60 Minutes’ Ariel Levy to talk about his career, his unforgettable characters and what’s next.

Fucking hell, they just did it! The BBC actually described the Islamo-leftist riots burning France to the ground as “MOSTLY PEACEFUL”! But Danny Tommo puncturing a people smuggling boat is terrorism to them. Defund them NOW!

In Sacha Baron Cohen’s new movie, “Ali G: Who Iz I?” he plays three characters who interact with real people. The scale of the challenge was unlike anything he had undertaken before. “We had to have, you know, prosthetic teams working on this for years. We had animatronic teams. There are hundreds and hundreds of things that can go wrong, and each of them has to go right,” he says. cbsn.ws/4sb9I4l

Can we get @JessicaTarlov to comment or would that be Islamophobic?
Christians are being massacred on a daily basis by Islamists in Africa. Yet there is no left-wing outrage. No Black Lives Matter riots. No Hollywood celebrity speaking out. No protests in European capitals. No Nothing. Their outrage is fake and selective.

I went on @BBCNewsnight and enraged all the usual radical-left loons stating these simple facts: ~1.85m foreign nationals claim £23 billion in welfare each year in Britain ~ 1.3m foreign nationals claim £11.9billion of Universal Credit Britain must put the British people first **Britains tax burden is the highest it’s been since the War (1948 to be exact)** If you want to lift people up, you have to create wealth. You have to incentivise work. Which means tax them less. Anyone who runs a business knows this. Since then, far-left X has launched a series of ad-hominem attacks. Some even saying these ideas are “extreme far-right” None of them have addressed the substance of my arguments. Instead they are trying to shame me for being in one of the most successful bands of last 20 years, whilst ignoring that I have one of the biggest independent politics podcasts in Britain. And ignoring that I’ve generated 10s of £millions in wealth and taxes for the economy, created 1000s of jobs, and built several successful companies. Likewise they think that I might be anything but immensely proud to be associated with my own dad, one of the most successful businessmen and generous individuals this country has produced since the War, and his association with GB News, officially the most viewed and trusted news channel in the country. He’s a hero. Thanks to Newsnight for having me!

In the new Behavioral Science for Brands episode with MichaelAaron Flicker, we look at the psychology of Novartis's award-winning campaign “Relax Your Tight End”. We talk about: 1. How it harnessed present bias by highlighting an alternative to the uncomfortable rectal test for prostate cancer 2. How it used humour to ease anxiety around prostate cancer  3. How it applied the messenger effect by featuring star NFL players like Greg Olsen and Rob Gronkowski Listen on Spotify: open.spotify.com/episode/3BT… Listen on Apple: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcas… Listen on YouTube: youtu.be/0y1-_AHDcnk?si=Zkd5… And let me know if there are any other great campaigns you think we should cover!

Zach told Jessica she looks like an average redhead in a weird dress and she just smiled. Why do actresses accept this? Zach asked Sally Field if she ate Anne Hathaway to gain weight then if she’s Jewish for hating pennies. How is this still funny? They promised Daniel Day-Lewis but look what they gave to us instead 😔
