The Bombay HC's order banning firecrackers on public streets, lanes and footpaths, across all festivals and all year, is a welcome step against toxic air and noise. Awaaz Foundation's tests of 17 crackers, many sold as "green", found missing or fake QR codes and no accurate chemical or noise details. The Government and Police must ensure such crackers are never sold. Stop illegal crackers at the source. @timesofindia @CMOMaharashtra @Dev_Fadnavis @mybmc @mpcb_official @MumbaiPolice

Jay walking is a term thats specifically north american, a lot of Europe has no "jaywalking" laws and in Germany, it's only illegal if a crossing is available in within 50-100, meters. All they ask is that you respect red lights. This perspective is decidedly that of a motorist.

The introduction of tall median barriers in Mumbai is a very unfortunate move. The older dividers needed universal access treatments but they contributed to a permeable walking environment across the city.
What is Pedestrian First?
Low-rise, surmountable dividers on Main Road, Lokhandwala, Andheri West, are being replaced with insurmountable ones with few , forcing thousands of daily market-goers to use a few designated crossings instead of crossing where convenient and safe. Vehicles often encroach upon zebra crossings and not yield for pedestrians at unsignalized intersections.
Lokhandwala is a busy market street, not a multilane arterial or a highway. It needs frequent crossings and basic footpath improvements, especially for senior citizens. instead BMC is spending money on adding barriers and neglecting the narrow footpaths.
At a time when cities worldwide are rethinking pedestrian-friendly streets, decriminalizing jay walking, making drivers negotiate for space with pedestrians, Mumbai is adding barriers that inconvenience people, need the pedestrian to beg for space on roads of all sizes and in-turn create consistent maintenance expenditures for plant watering and maintenance.
After the unnecessary installation of black guardrails on footpaths, these dividers are becoming a widespread practice that must be challenged. We need to resist this, starting with Lokhandwala.
Where is participatory planning and budgeting? On what basis was this decision made? What is Pedestrian First?
@AndheriLOCA and other local civic groups, please take note. Residents across neighbourhoods, please raise your voice. Repost and share to spread awareness.

Article seems to have missed the footpaths in and around Powai and Chandivali. Footpaths near the Old Hiranandani Market, opposite the Eden buildings in Powai, have been encroached upon and openly violating fire safety compliance for years. Additionally, shops located on the ground floor of the Eden buildings have encroached on the common areas, every footpath of chandivali is enroached despite being highlighted several times. For over 20 years, we've heard the same promises in every @mybmc BMC Budget announcement 'Pedestrian First Policy', 'Universal Footpath Policy', encroachment-free footpaths, safer streets and better walkability, special Footpath fund.
Yet, the reality on the ground remains unchanged.
Announcements are easy. Sustained implementation, accountability and administrative will are what Mumbai needs. Citizens deserve clear, obstruction-free footpaths and not another headline that fades away in a few weeks.

Absolutely we find such rallings even various places within jurisdiction of @mybmcWardT . A simple survey by maintenance team can identify at least 50 such places where railings have blocked the transferability of pedestrians making it difficult to get on road from footpaths
Such rallings are nothing but waste of public money at most places
Just watch a footpath planning for end to end public walking convenience considered while designing the footpaths in this video youtu.be/E_SJ1NBMrH0?si=wzxe…
Public convenience be at the top and not the restrictions like railings
Let’s design footpaths allowing free mobility and encroachment free walkability and meaning ful end to end connectivity across public transport modes
@mybmc
These railings were built using public money.
But are they actually needed?
IRC:103 (2022) is clear:
"Pedestrian guardrails should be only used where there is evidence that pedestrian safety can only be achieved by providing guardrails."
The IRC recommends guard rails primarily:
* Around intersections on arterial roads to direct pedestrians towards safe crossings.
* Around school and anganwadi entrances.
* On streets with high pedestrian volumes and fast-moving vehicles where pedestrians may spill onto the carriageway.
It also recommends avoiding kerb-side guard rails on streets with undivided carriageways where crossing is frequent and vehicle speeds are under 40 km/h.
Good street design is evidence-based. Public money should be spent where it genuinely improves pedestrian safety and walkability.
What do you think? Does this railing improve walking, or simply add another obstacle?

Every fallen tree is more than an infrastructure issue.
It can mean injuries, blocked emergency access, power outages, disrupted healthcare, and reduced shade when cities need it most.

Observation #5:
Singapore has many permanent pedestrian-only streets in dense, busy neighbourhoods like Downtown, Chinatown, Bras Basah, Clarke Quay and Boat Quay.
These areas extend from nearby metro stations such as Telok Ayer, Raffles Place, Chinatown, Clarke Quay and Bras Basah. They are lined with craft breweries, clubs, restaurants and shops with outdoor seating. Office-goers from nearby skyscrapers spill onto these streets during the day, while at night they transform into vibrant party hubs.
