Google has announced Canoa, the first subsea cable system to connect Bermuda directly to the Dominican Republic, creating a new southbound digital pathway between Bermuda and the Caribbean.
The announcement follows the recent landings of the Nuvem and Sol cable systems and the expansion of the Bermuda Digital Exchange Port, further strengthening Bermuda’s position as a trusted location for global digital infrastructure.
Minister of Home Affairs, the Hon. Alexa N. H. Lightbourne, JP, MP, said:
“This connection opens new digital pathways and partnerships between Bermuda, the Dominican Republic and the wider Caribbean Community, strengthens resilience for Bermudian households and businesses, and widens the market they can reach. Global infrastructure builders are choosing Bermuda repeatedly, and that confidence places our island on the world stage as a trusted landing point.”
The Ministry will work with the Regulatory Authority on the licensing and landing approvals required for the new system.

Speaking at yesterday’s joint press conference on road safety, the Minister of National Security, Senator the Hon. Ryan Robinson Perinchief, JP, addressed the urgent need for action following the loss of 13 lives on Bermuda’s roads this year.
Minister Robinson Perinchief confirmed that increased police visibility and stepped-up enforcement operations are underway, including roadside sobriety checkpoints, with road safety remaining a standing priority in his weekly discussions with Commissioner of Police Darrin Simons.
The Minister also stressed that enforcement alone cannot solve the challenge. Speeding, distracted and impaired driving, and dangerous risk-taking require a broader cultural shift and greater personal responsibility from everyone using Bermuda’s roads.
National Security will continue working alongside the Bermuda Police Service and the Ministry of Tourism, Transport, Culture & Sport on enforcement, data, deployment and wider measures aimed at achieving lasting change.
