Like, maybe it's just as simple as, the commodification of skill as any profession matures means we teach people *how* to do and not *why* to do, and "why" is what the most senior people care about, so they're devalued and leave, idk idk
Today's nice thing is learning @intercom and @thoughtwax linked to some work I did: the emulation of the Canon Cat at the @internetarchive. Serious nerdery in thread 👇
Want to feel like you’ve got sudden software superpowers? There’s probably a shortcut for that – @thoughtwax looks at how new best of breed business apps are out-innovating the incumbents. inter.com/2Xn41Fq
Two big companies released video games for vintage platforms on the web, both powered by WebAssembly-compiled emulators. McDonald's released a new Game Boy Color game, Grimace's Birthday, powered by the binjgb emulator: grimacesbirthday.com/
And, Capcom released several vintage NES and SNES games for their 40th anniversary as part of Capcom Town, powered by the ares emulator: captown.capcom.com/en/retro_…

Over two years ago I wondered whether Inform 7 (and related tools like @twinethreads or @YarnSpinnerTool) could be adapted to create voice UIs, esp. for non-programmers. Exciting to see the Alexa Games team at Amazon try something in this space: litexa.com/
Two and a half years later, Inform 7 goes open source, and as @zarfeblong writes, "…it opens the possibility of using Inform as middleware in other game frameworks." blog.zarfhome.com/2022/04/in…
Can now confirm. There's a large bin at the bottom of my freezer where I assume ice cubes are supposed to go. It is now completely filled with Oreo cookie wafers. It is not the only place with Oreo cookie wafers.

In case you're ever considering purchasing 23.1 pounds of Oreos, please be aware that 23.1 pounds of Oreos turns out to be an inappropriately large quantity of Oreos for a person to own. Just FYI.

Gotta stay relevant! There's one academic paper that includes both "Unrealty" and "metaverse" in it, and then also @icculus' Patreon post:

ALT Unrealty is a fascinating note in the history of Unreal. It was striving to fulfill that idea of using game engines for non-game things, of laying down a few cobblestones on the path to the Metaverse. After Unrealty was done, Vito went on to run the Unreal Developer Network for years. People that built Triple-A games and were to be personally responsible for future generations of the Unreal Engine came through Perilith's offices as contractors, young and unknown and about to change the world.

Ethnographer Götz Bachmann got to spend months observing the team around @worrydream that built @Dynamicland1. He published several papers on the process, their ethos and their ways of working.
To make his insights more widely available I summarized them: christophlabacher.com/notes/…
A @simonw comment last week reminded me to publish this, so: introducing "archival ownership markers," a .well-known URI to tell caches and archives when a domain is or isn't yours, to help keep your old content available: vitor.io/archival-markers 1/8
This doesn't solve all the issues that @ID_AA_Carmack was referencing in his recent tweets about IA being a host of record, which Simon was responding to. I think I address one specific scenario pretty well, and would like to hear about edge cases as folks try it. 7/8
Jonah also provided additional references, listed at the end of the report. Additional thanks to @CopyrightLibn for mentioning @ARLpolicy's "model deed of gift" at some point, which the marker's attestation is based on. 8/8

I'd love to see @TimSweeneyEpic publish "Unreal1Log.txt", his worklog from the last two years of Unreal 1 development.
And now:
Please enjoy this historical treasure: 2009-era IRC logs from the channel that was testing, developing and discussing the in-progress game that became known as "Minecraft".
