In the medieval legend of King Arthur, Merlin sometimes uses magical disguises to arrange meetings or conceal identities. In Geoffrey of Monmouth's account, he transforms Uther Pendragon's appearance into that of Gorlois so Uther can enter Tintagel and approach Igraine. #MythologyMonday

Trick or treating may have evolved from 'souling', a custom in which poor people would go around the neighbouring houses on holy days asking for food & drink. Many soulers were masked - a way to, literally, save face when asking for charity. #MythologyMonday #folklore #Halloween

Life Lately:
I'm either taking a nap… going to take a nap...
waking up from a nap... getting ready to take a nap... recovering from taking a nap…
thinking about naps… getting some things ready for my nap...
or thinking about where and when I will take my next nap.

Tonight, will your true love visit your dreams?
October 18 is St Luke’s Day, traditionally associated with love divination—a chance to glimpse the person you would marry.
An old charm called for marigold flowers, a sprig of marjoram, thyme and a little wormwood. These were dried before a fire, powdered and sifted through fine linen, then simmered with a little virgin honey and white vinegar.
Before sleeping, the hopeful dreamer anointed her stomach, breasts and lips with the mixture and repeated three times:
“St Luke, St. Luke, be kind to me,
In dream let me my true love see!” 😶🌫️
She was then to fall asleep, when, according to the belief, her future husband would appear in her dreams. 🌙
Flowers, whispered words and a glimpse of love yet to come…

Wonderland in 1925, with two very different Alices sharing the same book.

This large-format Donohue edition keeps Tenniel’s forty-two familiar drawings, but adds a bright colour frontispiece and pictorial endpapers by D. E. Saunders, giving Alice a distinctly 1920s look. The burgundy cloth binding is especially appealing, with a vivid colour panel gathering Alice, the White Rabbit, the Duchess, the Mad Hatter and other Wonderland favourites together on the cover. A wonderfully decorative American Alice, familiar enough to feel like home and different enough to make you look twice.
