I wrote a eulogy for a friend and mentor in Detroit media that also exemplifies how our local media ecosystem disproportionately measures the value of the Black journalists within it: michiganchronicle.com/longti…

More false information about Abdul: Detroit is in Wayne County, but it’s NOT under the Wayne County Health Department’s jurisdiction. Detroit has its own health department.
Wayne County itself says its public health jurisdiction is “Wayne County, except for the City of Detroit.”
Wayne County DID NOT fund public health initiatives in Detroit because it was “outside the county’s public health jurisdiction.” Those are his words, not mine.
It wasn’t until he was running for U.S. Senate and getting paid under a secret contract with the county that he decided to make phone calls to help fund RxKids in Detroit, per his own invoices. What changed? His will.
El-Sayed is the type of leader who lights the house on fire, then complains about how long it took the fire department to show up, then files a lawsuit blaming the city because he lost everything in the fire.
How has El-Sayed’s air quality monitoring program benefitted Detroit? Despite not being the county’s jurisdiction, somehow, the county’s contractor Just Air and Detroit Hamtramck Coalition did an air quality study in Detroit, which has been used by activists to fight Kronos Concrete. When that didn’t work out in their favor, an activist posted intimate, private photos of Mary Sheffield and her ex-boyfriend to pressure her into meeting with them and ultimately to shut the project down — in other words, to extort her. Now the city has multiple pending investigations, the same air quality, 10x more stress, and no policy changes — all thanks to your own tax dollars, and all in the name of “fighting corporate polluters.”
If he truly wanted to help people breathe cleaner air, he could’ve used taxpayer money to help county residents purchase whole-home air purifiers for their homes, like residents near Stellantis were begging the city to do. Most of the complaints Wayne county’s health department receives are about mold in homes so it would’ve been justified. Hard to imagine Warren Evans would’ve told him no anyways — he’s the ultimate “yes man.”
I’m not out to get anybody. I’ve watched Detroit City Council meetings every week and Wayne County Commission meetings every other week since 2021. The public record don’t lie, baby!
For 14 years Miss Powell and I shared a manicurist in downtown Detroit. Her appointment every two weeks was an hour before mine. I'd come to my appointment early to make sure I'd not miss her. She had plenty of stories to share. @motown @Motown_Museum

Thanks friend Corey Williams for the @AP obit on my friend Marlene Johnson. It's poetic that AP publish the obit on the Black journalist who sued them for discrimination that led to them to hire more woman, Black and Hispanic journalists.

It happened again.
Another Black woman journalist asked tough, necessary questions of Donald Trump and was met with disrespect instead of answers.
Black women journalists are doing their jobs with professionalism, preparation and integrity.
