Not a word on Twitter still about the flagrantly authoritarian and racist raid on Ilhan Omar’s home by the Trump administration from multiple top Democrats, including shamefully @SenSchumer, but glad Barack Obama is finally speaking out on it. Other Dems should follow his lead.
It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say. But that’s exactly what the Trump Administration is doing to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota. To understand why this is so appalling, it’s important to know the facts. Congresswoman Omar came to this country with her father when she was 12 years old. Five years later, her father became a naturalized citizen. If Ilhan had been 18 at the time, she would have had to apply for citizenship separately. But because she was 17, she became a naturalized citizen automatically. Congresswoman Omar went on to graduate from college, work as a community organizer, become the first Somali-American legislator elected to public office in the U.S., and win a seat in Congress. There, she has been one of the Trump Administration’s fiercest critics, which has led the president to repeatedly single her out as someone who he believes does not belong in this country. Now the Administration is actively trying to deport Congresswoman Omar, seemingly based solely on the unsubstantiated theory that she was actually 18 when her father was naturalized, and therefore is not a citizen. Federal agents have raided her home, confiscated personal records, and seized her phone — all to try and uncover a nonexistent smoking gun from 20 years ago that will somehow make their case. Think about that. The full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official because she has dared to criticize the president. And it’s not the first time this has happened. Under President Trump, the Justice Department has repeatedly gone after those he considers his political enemies — from the Attorney General of New York, to the former head of the FBI, to members of the Federal Reserve. In those cases, the prosecutions either stalled or were dismissed for having no basis in law, and the same is likely to happen in this case. But not before Congresswoman Omar’s life has been turned upside down, her legal bills have piled up, and she’s been forced to spend time fighting unsubstantiated charges instead of serving the people of Minnesota. The fact that any president, or any administration, is willing to engage in such transparent efforts to intimidate someone should outrage all Americans, regardless of how they feel about Congresswoman Omar’s political views. Because if this becomes the new normal, there’s no reason to believe it will stop with her — or that future presidents, in either party, won’t do the same.

Some people in France think that way which shows a total ignorance of how democracy and constitution are supposed to work. Not an iota of progressive or democratic content to this claim
We did, over a year ago. We were supposed to have a leftist prime minister but Macron decided he didn’t give a fuck about elections and popular vote and he appointed an ultra right winged PM. So now we’re rioting

I do understand that the Palestinian flag is the symbol of resisting for the oppressed, but the Palestinian flag also is a symbol for thousands of martyers who would never accept the idea of anyone destroying and looting his country to carry that flag. Raising the Palestinian flag in France during rioting does more harm more than it helps the Palestinian cause.

I came to see NAZA during an Atlanta screening and the thing that stands out the most to me is how the audience is full of white folks. 15 years ago only Arabs would have been interested in this topic.

One story in particular made me cry because the story is worth a beautiful movie. Presidents Counsel Upul Kumarapperuma lost his young son in June. He was grieving. He joined the legal team that went to Saudi Arabia for the diplomatic and legal negotiations.

Bennet's anti-Qatar hyperbole to a side, a most important change in the likely Eisenkot government will be a chance to rebuild its ties with Egypt, Jordan and other Arab partners -- but it can't do that if it shows endless intransigence on Palestine

I occasionally hear liberal criticism of @IsraAID simply because it is Israeli. That's unfair. IsraAID is a humanitarian organization based in TelAviv but it's nongovernmental and I've seen it do good, non-political work around the world. It's simply in the business of saving lives. More power to it.

This weekend, households across America tuned into a @60Minutes report on settler terror, where they witnessed violent young Israelis terrorizing Palestinians and attacking a family as journalists watched. We must confront the Israeli government that enables settler violence and lets perpetrators act with impunity.

Jewish tradition commands us to care for the stranger, remembering that we, too, have known what it means to be outsiders. The search of Rep. Ilhan Omar’s home over immigration paperwork, against a backdrop of years of attacks on her Somali heritage, is nothing short of an abuse of Trump’s power and an attack on immigrants in this country.
Breaking News: Homeland Security agents executed a search warrant at the home of Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota. The Justice Department has historically avoided such investigative moves related to political candidates so close to elections. nyti.ms/3Un76Uv

Trump's continued attacks on @Ilhan, the Somali American community, & our Muslim neighbors are a heinous attempt to distract from his complete & utter failure as president. Every American should be chilled to the bone: these are the actions of a dictatorship not a democracy.
Breaking news: Federal authorities searched the D.C. home of Rep. Ilhan Omar on Monday morning, intensifying long-standing immigration-related accusations from Republicans regarding the nation’s first Somali American lawmaker. wapo.st/4zuN9Kp
