It’s not bad luck, it’s a predictable pattern that repeats every 18.6 years!
In The Secret Life of Real Estate and Banking, Phil Anderson explores how interest rates move in a rhythm that repeats every 18.6 years.
Taking on a massive mortgage at the peak of an interest rate spike is dangerous. But as Phil points out in his book, these high rates don't last forever.
When the housing market cools down, central banks will drop interest rates again. This will make mortgages cheaper, giving smart buyers a chance to step back in or refinance at much lower rates.

Fundamental analysis helps in identifying great businesses with long runways. i.e. what to buy.
Technical analysis helps with timing i.e. when to buy, when to hold and when to sell.
Combining both disciplines is super important.

I often feel like a bit of an imposter commenting on Canadian politics as I am not Canadian myself. But I really do love the country, own a bunch of real estate there, have a lot of Canuck friends, and did send my four kids (who do have Canadian passports) to boarding school there… all this as a prelude to my take on the US-Canada trade war, that I fervently hope will be the start of something better for Canada?

Why should we care about rising yields? Because when the risk-free asset is competitive with equities (as it is now), a de-rating in Treasuries should lead to a derating of equities. That’s what happened from the 1960’s through mid-1990’s. And if risky assets ignoring this dynamic (as they did in 1987), the consequences can be harsh.

Colombia’s elections are officially over, and the shift away from the far left continues to gain momentum across South America.
South America is moving toward a region-wide pro-business agenda unlike anything in recent history.
Investors are still underestimating what could become one of the defining investment themes of the next decade.
